The warm summer air smelled of hay, popcorn, cotton candy, beer and pretzels. The sun was just setting and soon twilight would be on them. That magical time betwixt evening and night...just long enough to make the perfect summer memory.

As Ensign Plumeri and Abbey Wyatt walked along the outdoor "midway" section between the big top and the outdoor concert stage where some very good music was being played not so good. Four kids hands filled with iced cream and overstuffed toy animals ran past and through the two Starfleet personnel as they enjoyed a walk through this section.

"Whoa...whoa!", Matthew said as the kids zoomed by. He smiled so broadly and laughed. "They're having the time of their lives! So...what'd you like best about the circus so far?" he asked her. He walked closer to her now and wished he could slip his hand into the pocket on the rear of her pants. That's what it's there for right?

The sun was in her eyes and made her squint just a little. The way her nose wrinkled as she looked at him was very, very cute. Her hair framed her face very well, and her eyes sparkled back at him. Inside...was a bad girl that he had yet to meet.

Abbey watched as the children ran past, she smiled as they did. She was reluctant at first to agree with this walk around the area with Matthew but he had this aura about him which made Abbey doubt herself. She hadn't realised Mattew asking the question until they stood at the edge of the circus encampment, she turned to face him. "Urm sorry, I was lost in thought".

He laughed, "Not important. Something on your mind? You're pretty cute when you're lost in thought." Somewhere inside a tent some music started and in the booths ahead of them games of chance awaited.

Abbey gave her best appreciative smile before shaking her head "Nothing important. Hey, that looks like it could be fun!" She said quickly pointing over to a tent which surrounded by booths.

Matt grinned, "C'mon?! Let's win a prize ay?" he indicated with his head towards the water squirt guns.

Abbey smiled "Sure but traditionally the man is meant to win the lady a prize" She nudged him with her shoulder before running off to the water guns.

He grinned very wide and said, "You're a traditional girl huh? You don't strike me as 'must play by the rules'. RACE YA!"

And he leapt forward ahead of her, playfully grabbing her hand and then pulling her along laughing.

Not having time to react before he had held of her hand Abbey ran behind him just giving him enough tug to think he was quicker. She was slowly beginning to relax with Matthew, even enjoyed the feel of his hands holding hers despite the fact they had only met a few weeks ago. (Doing it so they meet at the wedding?).

When they reached the counter he picked two open water guns side by side one for him and one for her. "We'll see who wins what!" As he winked and laughed.

"Ooh my prince charming" She faked a faint before picking up her water pistol resisting the childish act of squirting him, at least for the moment anyway. Everything about this was you're typical teen summer love though Abbey wouldn't call it that she usually never played hard to get but after Jason she was careful about who she entrusted with her emotions.

"You do know how to hold a gun don't you?" he teased. "It's all about how you hold it. Right? Pick it up gently, don't grab at it. Make sure that you have a good...grip on it. Not too tightly though."

He smiled as his innuendo and carefully chosen words were accentuated as he helped her with the water gun. He grinned with his word play.

"Gently, squeeze the trigger, be careful where you point it. Wouldn't want it to go off prematurely...or...in your face now would we?" He grinned at her...such a bad boy!

Letting out an uncontrollable. short burst of giggling she could feel the warmth fill her cheeks, imagining they were a bright rosy red. Abbey wasn't exactly a golden child but something about Matthew made her feel innocent and pure in the best possible way especially when he used obvious innuendos a bit like this" she turned and pointed the water pistol for a moment delaying.

"Aww girl...c'mon? You wouldn't shoot me would you? I might catch a cold?", he laughed.

Abbey winked cruely before opening fire, she hadn't originally intended to fire for such a long duration but the sensation of fun and happiness was overwhelming, abbey was actually really enjoying herself. "I thought you needed some water to cool down" she added.

Matt grinned so broadly and tried to deflect the water as he grabbed the other water gun. The hose was shorter and he did not have the range. He laughed so playfully as he struggled to shoot her back, and his water stream was not going to reach. When she finally stopped his face and shirt were wet. But he was so happy.

He smiled back at her and wiped his face exposing his muscled abs and he said, "Whew!! That's one way to cool down!" He paid for the water gun anyway and said to Abbey, "Just for that...I'm a git you!"

Abbey giggled again as she turned to face the about game with her water gun "Oh? And how do you plan on doing that? I don't think I'll be able to take your serious all soaking wet" She teased.

He wiped his face with his shirt and then let the t-shirt fall. "That's good. That's really good. Life is too fun to be taken seriously all the time. Am I right?" He looked at her and then leraned onto the counter with one arm. The other arm he put on his hip and said, "Isn't it great to get out of the uniform for a little bit...and just...be?"

He looked at her and grinned so playfully, "Aww...girl you are so fine! I love that smile of yours! C'mon? Walk with me? Talk with me? Tell me about Abbey? And when we're done...I might be all dry and we'll have some dinner? I might even spring for it too. Or...maybe a bag of elephant grade peanuts. I haven't decided yet!"

He laughed and pinched her playfully and then offered his outstretched hand in the warm summer breeze of evening. "C'mon...let's go?"

Abbey rolled her eyes, he was the biggest jerk she had ever met but also the cutest she couldn't help but looking at his Baby face and his endless sea blue eyes. The way he teased her with not just his words but the way his eyes darted across her body he was certainly a finely tuned flirting machine but is that what she wanted? "Matthew..." She started with a mumble avoiding eye contact "Just tell me something?"

He nodded. "OK, shoot? What would you like to know?"

She looked up and smiled at him with her rosy red cheeks and vibrantly coloured lips "Do you do this to all the girls you meet?" She didn't want to know the answer especially if it was the one she didn't want to hear but after her last experience she didn't just want a summer fling or one night stand.

Matt crossed his arms and he looked at her. His smile was still there and he sensed that her question was more serious than he was. He changed a little bit and said, "If you're asking me...am I a flirt? I am. I do like the ladies and I do like having fun. If you're asking do I do this with all the girls. No. I don't. Just the ones that...I want to get to know better."

Abbey sighed as she looked back towards the ground "I get it" She knew that he was to good to be true he was another Liam another flirt who at the sign of the next prettiest girl would leave. She knew how to pick them. "I should see if the group are about" she said quietly.

Matt could see the obvious change in her demeanor, "Abbey? Hey? Where'd you go just now? What's wrong?"

My father went missing for weeks, my mum died I have never settled down anywhere in my life... What's not wrong She replied mentally before looking up to him "I've just had a rough couple of weeks, I don't know how to explain and I really dont think its fair on you to do so but Matthew you're sweet, really sweet and I could like you I really could but..." She looked up to him, his bright blue eyes once again cutting through her rough exterior shell that she had just barley built. He seemed closer perhaps she moved closer to him or he had chosen to close the gap growing between them.

At that moment she could imagine being in his embrace, with his arms wrapped tight around her his lips pressed softly on hers but as the thought surfaced it disappeared.

He was concerned and he stepped closer, his voice warm and genuine, "Abbey...I didn't know...any of that. I'm sorry. Look...I play around a lot. I don't mean...any disrespect by it. I'm sorry you've had it rough these past weeks. I didn't know. Look - we can do whatever you want OK? I don't want anything from you...I'm not trying to trick you to get into pants or anything like that...OK? Hey...ok?"

He looked at her and smiled again to see if she was OK. "Don't let my face fool ya'. I'm really an OK guy."

She couldn't help but smile "And I didn't mean you're anything but an OK guy" She leaned in and kissed him on the cheek "Shall we get back?" She asked looking over her shoulder to the main tent.

He looked at her and was surprised, pleasantly, by the kiss. He grinned so broadly back at her. "Girl...you're just full of surprises!" He liked being near her. And if for the next few hours she could forget about her troubles and just enjoy being with friends...he would be just as happy. Abbey was a very good looking woman. There was light and happiness in her. That's what he liked to see and what he wanted to let shine.

He extended his arm and wiping the last bit of water from the end oh his nose said, "Let's go!"
