Mission: Episode 03 - Frontier
Location: Deck 3, Delainey's Office, USS Galileo
Timeline: MD 7, 0730 hrs.

Jared glanced in the mirror and finger combed his hair. He shouldn't really care what he looked like, he wasn't going on a date after all. Nonetheless he did care. He wanted to make a good impression, to be taken seriously.

There was something drastically wrong with someone he considered to be a friend. He left his cabin after straightening out his uniform and went to the Counselor's office where he pressed the chime hoping someone was around.

The doors swished open and the visitor was greeted with the pleasant but somewhat surprised expression of Delainey Carlisle. Walk-ins weren't unheard of, of course, but they happened rarely for Delainey, especially before the official start of her duty shift. She supposed the department yeoman had directed the young man to her office as she had come in early.

Delainey stood. "Hello. I'm Delainey Carlisle. Please, come in."

"Thank you for seeing me Lieutenant Carlisle." he said extending his hand. "I needed to talk with you about an urgent matter. It's about a friend of mine I just left. It was supposed to be a date, but he just left in the middle of it and I think he may even be suicidial."

Delainey shook the proffered hand as she listened, but she became
more serious by the time he finished. "I'll need his name, and some brief detail as to why you believe he's suicidal. Depending on the specifics, I'll decide how to intervene." Carlisle had to walk the thin line between preserving the crewmember's safety and avoiding unnecessary intrusion. Until she knew a bit more, she couldn't be certain the information was credible. Her hand was poised over her commbadge, however, ready to contact the person in question and to ascertain his location.

His name is Ansen Pawlak. He is human and he's a civilian. He recently lost his brother which I am sure had to be traumatic. The other night I stopped by the kitchen. Up until that time I'd only met him in passing earlier that afternoon.

At any rate I only went there hoping to get a midnight snack but he was there and we got to talking, the talking turned to flirting and the flirting turned to a lack of judgement on my part and we wound up having some rather satisfying sex in the middle of the kitchen.

At least it was satisfying till Mr. Stone came calling. Our little friends with benefits display was caught on the security tapes.

I was tossed in the brig over it for several hours and he was too for a short while.

I went to talk to him abut the incident and he proceeded to take the blame for things, when in fact we were both equally guilty. I tried to talk to him about that but he really wasn't in the mood. I guess on top of everything else, he doesn't think that anyone cares about him.

He made a number of statements to that effect both at that time and later. He was acting really depressed, though I admit I am no expert in the matter, was saying he didn't really have friends and wanted to know why I cared about him. I talked about wanting to become friends, potentially more and that just seemed to push him further away. I could see I wasn't getting anywhere with him so we decided on a date.

Nice Risan holiday on the holodeck or at least it was supposed to be. Nice weather, nice scenery if you know what I mean, I just wanted him to relax. No expectations or anything. He continued to talking about not having friends and not being able to give me the relationship I wanted-though I had only talked about a potential relationship and not wanting to stick around me because he didn't want to jeopardize my career. Then he just sat his drink down and walked out.

He may not be suicidal but he sure as hell is depressed."

Delainey nodded. This was a situation that was definitely worth looking into, but she had to tread carefully. Pawlak was a civillian, which meant she didn't have the same authority over him that she did members of Starfleet. As a counselor, she could always assert her concern that a Federation citizen posed a danger to himself and needed treatment, but if Pawlak chose to leave the Galileo rather than accept help, that would be his right. "Thank you very much for bringing this to my attention, Ensign Nichols. I appreciate anyone who's willing to step forward and look out for a friend, especially because some people think reaching out to a counselor violates some sort of code. If you'll excuse me, I'll contact Ansen right now. Don't worry, I won't tell him you talked to me if you're not comfortable."

"You're welcome counselor, and I have not problem in your telling him I told you."

"That's good to know," Delainey replied. "I may need to disclose that you told me if he gets too defensive. I know it couldn't have been easy to come forward, but I can see you care for him a lot. I'll take it from here for now."

"Yes I care for him at least as a friend. I don't know if it will get beyond that, but as long as he's hurting. He really needs your help."
