Location: Starbase 418 - Office of Administration, Command Deck
Timeline: July 30th, 2390 - 11:45 hrs

[ON]

The following is the conclusion of a post mission evaluation of subject: MITCHELL, GREG T. The interviewer, Lieutenant Jacob Friar, is designated with initial "F". Chief Warrant Officer Mitchell designated with initial "M".

Please note this is not a continuous transcript from the previous one. One local "day" passed since the conclusion of the previous day's evaluation. Interview summary and recommendations to follow at the conclusion of this transcript.

Lieutenant Friar: "Begin recording. Day two of interview. Recording subject: Chief Warrant Officer Greg Mitchell, serial YW-280-1774. Interviewer is Lieutenant Jacob Friar, Office of Administration. Reason for recording: Post mission debriefing and standard mental evaluation for authorization of transfer to new posting."

CWO2 Mitchell: "Wait, where's the other guy?"

F: "Commander Williamson?"

M: "Yah, him."

F: "He had a doctors appointment. Couldn't make it. He had me fill in for your final evaluation.

M: "This is the last one?"

F: "Yes."

M: "Friggen finally..."

F: "Right, lets get started. So..."

(Mitchell interrupts.)

M: "Before we start, sir, are you going to ask I clarify anything 'for the record'?"

F: "I hadn't planned on it especially since, according to Commander Williamson, we are into your Starfleet career. Everything we discuss now is common knowledge."

M: "And what about Earth pop culture? Especially historical movies. Do you know any of them?"

F: "I took a few film history classes just for fun. I like to watch some old movies too. But what does that have to do...."

(Mitchell mumbles something. After selective volume enhancement, it is revealed to be a statement along the lines of "Finally, someone normal on this station.")

F: "I'm sorry?"

M: "I said 'ready when you are sir'!"

F: "O.k. Let's see where the Commander left off. Ok, your tour on the Star Angel. According to ship reports, nothing really out of the ordinary happened."

M: "Mirandas are more along the lines of scouts. Compared to the bigger warships, you would be hard pressed to put one of these into battle without tons of backup. We had a few skirmishes here and there, mostly with pirates and the usual rogue freighter. Caught a few possible enemy warship pings on sensor, but after approach the contacts disappeared."

F: "Good. After your tour ended on the Star Angel, you were transferred to USS Ohio, NCC 77619 in 2385. Sovereign class."

M: "Yes sir."

F: "How long?"

M: "Four years, 2385 to 2389."

F: "You were deployed to the Neutral Zone?"

M: "Yes sir. Though not at first. I had been on the ship for two years and we were patrolling some unknown sector of space, Heaven knows where, when we got the Emergency Action Message. It described the supernova of Romulus' star. We were told the fleet had gone to Red Alert, and that most of available patrol vessels had been ordered to the Neutral Zone along with any available hospital ship in case the Romulans allowed us to cross over and give aid."

F: "But the EAM didn't give the full details."

M: "No....I'm no scientist sir. I don't know what micro changes or environmental damage stars can cause just by changing the way they operate. But I do know that a giant shockwave is not something you want to encounter. I knew it was going to devastate the planet, but not to the extent that it did."

F: "What did the Ohio do when it arrived?"

M: "Captain Del Rio ordered the ship full stop and await orders to cross. We were certain we would be able to just warp over there and give aid. But command sent in word that the shockwave was more powerful then originally predicted. They responded that all aid ships were to hold until further notice, that the Vulcans had thought of an idea."

F: "Ambassador Spock."

M: "Who knew a black hole could suck in an entire blast from a star? But that's what they theorized. Personally, I never believe something will work until I see it. But....in hindsight, I wish it could have been done sooner. We got the message later that the rescue mission was too late. Romulus was...gone. A whole planet of people destroyed. I may not like the Romulans, especially after their actions against us, but I don't ever wish what happened to them on anyone else. Women, children, the rebels who supported peace with the Federation. They were all dead."

F: "It was a shock to many people."

M: "Yes it was. And the news didn't get better. We learned later that Ambassador Spock succeeded in stopping the nova, but not without sacrificing himself. Learning of his death was as big of a shock as when I learned Captain Kirk was killed on Veridian 3. I love historical figures. I put the crew of the Enterprise up there with people such as General Washington, General Grant, Admiral Nimitz...you know, historical people. People who would always be remembered."

F: "It was a sad day for the Federation. And Romulus. Ambassador Spock was working hard to bring peace between both our governments. After the blast, what did the Ohio do?"

M: "For the next year, refugees who weren't on Romulus during the explosion started making their way to us. We were ordered to make sure no hot headed radical decided to use that moment to make an attack on the Federation. There was a small rescue group nearby. Three hospital ships, guarded by a wolf-pack of Defiant class ships. We were ordered to patrol the, basically now defunct, Neutral Zone and make sure there were no hostile Warbirds or that the civilian vessels coming over did not register with any explosives on board. More of a show that we were open to help, but we would not tolerate a stupid move on their part."

F: "I understand. It says here that on stardate...."

(Lieutenant Friar stops, taps the date on Mitchell's report, which brings up a note from Commander Williamson that reads: 'Subject improperly marked all debriefing reports with an Earth date. The matter has been addressed.')

F: "On August 4th, 2388, the Ohio was involved in an incident."

M: "Yes."

F: "...do you want to tell me about it?"

M: "It's in the official report by my superior. This is just what I witnessed."

F: "I would like to hear what you witnessed."

M: "Sir, I didn't make any command decisions. I don't see how this affects my transfer request."

F: "All the same, I would like to hear how you handled the incident."

M: (Sighing) "Yes sir. Because we were at Red Alert in a high incident situation, we were all pulling twelve hour shifts. I and another were on the bridge at the time. The tactical officer picked up a sensor contact, bearing 2-4-0 from our position. We approached, shields raised, and found nothing. At least, no contact."

F: "What was it?"

M: "A buoy. It had distracted us from the hospital ships. All of a sudden, we registered an explosion. A Romulan Warbird had de-cloaked and made a suicide run into one of the Defiant vessels. For some unknown reason, a second didn't have his shields up. The Warbird destroyed him immediately. We made an immediate hard to port, and started at full speed back to the ships. Captain Del Rio ordered the remaining Defiant vessels to cover the retreat of the Hospital ships.

M continued: But before we could arrive, the Warbird re-cloaked and ran to the other side of the hospital vessels, cutting them off. They appeared again and fired, penetrating the shields of the ships and destroying two of them. A third was damaged badly. They just opened fire on vessels carrying their own. Why would they do that.

F: "Knowing the Romulans, they probably thought that anyone asking the Federation for help was a traitor and deserved to die."

M: "I guess. The Defiant vessels made a bee line for the Warbird and opened fire. Those little suckers are powerful, but better in numbers. They were fast enough to dodge return fire from the Warbirds, but not powerful enough to destroy it. The ship re-cloaked and moved further to our port side, before reappearing. At that time, the Captain ordered all tubes ready and to set a firing solution on the Warbird. A few seconds later, tactical confirmed we had a firing solution, but were not fully locked on the vessel. The Defiant vessels re-engaged, weakening the Warbirds shields.

M continued: In that time, we had got close enough for our weapons to be more accurate, but we couldn't risk the Warbird cloaking again. The Captain ordered a 'snap shot' meaning the torpedoes would have to be fired, and we had to pray that they locked on. Tubes one and two fired full quantum torpedos."

F: "Then what happened?"

M: "By an act of God, we were close enough that they did in fact lock on. After 900 meters, they armed. They penetrated the weakened shields and struck the Warbird. That gave the Defiant vessels time to fire full weapons and destroy the ship."

F: "So the situation was resolved?"

M: "More or less. We still lost ships, and people. And...innocent civilians. The third hospital ship had to be evacuated and we took the load. I was ordered with others to go secure the cargo bays for the massive incoming casualties. Medical had already set up by the time we got there and there was already some wounded in there."

F: "How did you react to seeing those injured."

M: "What the hell kind of question is that?"

F: "I mean, what kind of reaction did you have? This was your first intense situation."

M: "How do you think I reacted. I was pissed. No child should ever have to see what those kids did. No civilian should go through that.....no one....."

F: "O.k. One more question, then we will wrap up. There was a Romulan in the mix."

M: "Oh no, come on sir. That's in the report."

F: "I'd like to hear your take on it. The Romulan, he became hostile. Why?"

M: ".....It was later determined that he was the spy who told the Warbird where the hospital vessels were. He was...a hot headed radical. He tried to jump us."

F: "Then you killed him."

M: "He grabbed my partner's phaser. So I shot him. He was a threat, and I got rid of him. Simple as that."

F: "You felt no lasting emotions after that? Fear, regret, anger?"

M: "....he was going to kill others. I did what I had to do."

F: "And that was the first time you killed someone?"

M: "........yes sir......."

(Friar writes down more notes.)

F: "Ok, Mr. Mitchell. We're done for the day."

M: "Is that it. Am I good to go to another ship?"

F: "I cannot guarantee, that's up to Commander Williamson. But Dr. Morganstern has cleared you mentally. And your record is still clean, minus a couple of reprimands. One for report dating......But other than that, you are good. I will pass this onto the Commander and he will make the final say. We do have a possible ship on file that would fit what you are looking for. She is in need of new crew."

M: "What is it?"

F: "USS Galileo, NCC 80010. Nova class, so she's a science vessel. Less likely to get into battle. She's just coming back from.....oh."

M: "What?"

F: "Uh, nothing. I was just thinking out loud. She hasn't had that eventful of a history, you should be fine."

M: "Are you sure?"

F: "Yes, positive. She's....she's a good ship and you should be fine. Now, that appears to be everything today. If you have no further questions, I have my son's music recital to get to."

M: "Really? Cool. What's he doing?"

F: "Unfortunately something very old, and not quite what I like. But it makes him happy.

M: "What song?"

F: "Elton John, Club at the End of the Street. I never liked Elton John that much. Too pop feeling and slow for me."

M: "....what?"

F: "Yah, I just never thought he was that talented."

(Mitchell stands quiet for ten seconds.)

M: "Oh no....no..no....nonononono...uh uh....no.."

CWO2 Mitchell then proceeds into a ten minute rant (while remaining respectful to rank) about how Elton John is one of the most talented singers ever, how the Lieutenant's son has a great taste in music, and how everyone in this office has a horrible taste in Earth history. After leaving, CWO2 Mitchell returns to his temporary quarters where he proceeds to bang his head on the wall, then watch "The Hunt for Red October" to calm down.

It should be noted that, aside from a minor issue of speaking his mind, CWO2 Mitchell is never insubordinate, and the aforementioned outburst was about an unrelated issue that Lieutenant Friar himself brought up. Commander Williamson has since sped up transfer process to move CWO2 Mitchell off the station and onto Jupiter Station in Sol system, where he will board USS Galileo after she arrives.
