Ship and Patience

Posted on 28 Feb 2015 @ 11:47am by Lieutenant Prudence Devin Ph.D.

395 words; about a 2 minute read

"I will be honest," Prudence said as she sat in front of the screen, holding a glass containing two fingers of scotch. She sipped it before looking down at the journal in front of her, where she had written it all up. "I am getting a better feel of the crew."

She smiled weakly, shaking her head. "The XO used to have my job. Now that it daunting in itself as she had a very good reputation. If I fail, she will be harsher on me than someone who had not successfully done the job. I shall not fail, it solves that."

"I am finding...elements of the crew difficult. Childish. My patience with foolish ideas and such...has started to wear thin with age," there was a small, cheeky smile at that and she laughed. "Not that I usually feel this old. It must be the youth surrounding me, sucking my energy."

She sat back in the chair, pulling a leg up to hug. She had covered her nightdress with a man's dressing gown, dark red which seemed to swallow her up a bit. She found it extremely comforting for days like this. "But overall, the crew is friendly. I have had some in my office already. My actual department? Small. But experienced. There is something off with my Assistant Chief. I can't..put my finger on it, but I can see it. Again, that might be my paranoia. I am sure that if there was an issue, she would be referred my Medical to me, or go and speak to me myself."

"Luckily, for this training mission or whatever they have cooked up, I remain of the Galileo. It will be good to stay here so I can...settle in," she admitted, her voice soft befor she shook her head. "It is important to settle in and build a social network."

Prudence watched her journal for a moment before smiling, reaching to stroke it. "I suppose having written this down made it feel more manageable. And saying it into a computer makes it...real. I am here. For as long as the ship will have me. And until my patience is all worn out"

She finished her drink and leant closer, watching the computer briefly. "Computer, end personal log," she said and pulled back, getting up. Time to go to bed.
