Departures

467 words; about a 2 minute read

"Computerr. Begin Perrsonal log. M'Ressa."

The camera blinked to life, and image of a distraught looking Caitian female peering at the screen. It was obvious from her appearance that she'd been crying. Her normally pristine mane was a mess, her face soaked with tears.

"This will be my last log as a rresearch scientist on the Galileo. Two days ago I tenderred my rresignation."

M'Ressa paused, a tear rolling down her cheek. "Why did I rresign? That's the question isn't it. One word. One perrson. Teth." Another pause as M'Ressa worked to compose herself.

"Teth. The man I thought I loved. The man I thought loved me. Things werre going along just fine. We hung out a lot, talked quite a bit. He seemed interrested in us and wherre we werre going as a couple. Then three weeks ago, poof! He up and leaves the Galileo. No warrning, no nothing. Does not even tell me, the girrl he prrofessed to carre deeply about. I've spent the past thrree weeks trying to contact him, find out why he up and left, leaving me with a brroken hearrt and nothing but questions."

M'Ressa took a deep breath before she continued. "On top of that, Teth left me a prresent, six little prresent's to be exact." M'Ressa stood, presenting herself to the camera so her stomach could be seen in profile. An obvious bump could be seen on her slender frame, making her look like she was six months along rather then the 17 weeks she actually was.

Sitting back down she frowned. "Yeah, that's rright. Teth's going to be a daddy. Prroblem is he doesn't know."

"Nobody knows actually, at least not on the Galileo. I'd suspected I was prregnant since nearr the end of the last mission. Call it female intuition but I knew something was happening. I chose not to say anything and I'd been avoiding getting a scan done to confirrm until I was confident I was rright. Before that scan tho, Teth up and left so I neverr knew and wasn't going to scarre him on a hunch."

"So I ended up speaking with a doctorr on the starrbase who's familiarr with my species and he confirrmed that in fact I was expecting, six offsprring. He says they'rre developing well, which I am glad to hearr."

M'Ressa wiped a tear from her eye. "I'll miss the Galileo but rright now, I need to be with my family, the supporrt of my clan as I journey thrrough this." M'Ressa grinned. "I may even get to see family I haven't seen in ages. My sisterr M'Elise, herr oldest daughterr K'Rren is moving back to Cait as well. She's been offerred to trrain underr ourr den motherr and it'll be nice to see herr as well."

"Computerr. End Rrecorrding."
