001 - Just Arrived

Posted on 28 Jun 2012 @ 12:39pm by Commander Scarlet Blake

473 words; about a 2 minute read

Leaning back in her chair, Scarlet allowed herself a sip of the scorching hot coffee, sighing with relief. She'd not long been onboard, but at least recording her log was a good excuse to sit down for a couple of minutes in between unpacking, looking after Lily and preparing for work.

She reached forward, tapping the panel to begin. "So, I guess this is home now? I like it so far. I've not been on a Nova before. I've never really been a ship fan really, one is much the same as the other to me, but this one is...shiny."

Taking a sip of her coffee, she considered for a moment, clearly thinking to herself and over her next words. "It's been a while now, since I left the Marines. I don't know, being a counsellor is fine, I just," she paused, holding her breath, "I miss the rifle, what can I say," she chuckled at herself, shaking her head at how that had to sound.

"I sound violent, I know. I don't mean it like that. Just when the chips are down, I feel a bit like a spare part these days," she shrugged lightly.

"Hello Mr Computer!" the young voice of Lily sounded before her head popped into view on the screen as she tried to scramble up into her mother's lap.

Scarlet laughed, shaking her head as she looked into the computer screen that was recording, pulling Lily up into her lap. "I've tried to explain that it's not a person I'm talking to, that you just record what I am saying," she stopped, shaking her head as she laughed with disbelief. "Did you hear that? She has me saying it now! I just called you a 'you'!"

Scarlet shook her head slowly, playing with the little girl's fingers as she smiled. She thought for a long moment, not caring if there was a gap on the log. "It's a challenge," she said softly, not looking up. "Juggling everything. But we get by, don't we Lily," she smiled as the girl nodded her head firmly, but it was clear by the distracted look on the child's face that she didn't know what she was nodding about.

"The ride over was fine, people seem friendly, but that sometimes changes when they realise you're a counsellor," she gave a knowing look at that, but her features showed it didn't bother her. "Just a part of the job. And hey, I've already had an offer for babysitting! What more could I ask for!" she looked back to the screen with wide eyes, nodding, impressed. "Hm, perhaps I shouldn't say that actually, there's plenty of things I can think to ask for," she said with a near teasing tone. "Either way, I'm sure we're going to be just fine here. Computer, end log."
