I feel I have adjusted to my new position as well as I can right now. The sensor suite is top of the line and on par with what I trained on at the Academy. In fact it is exactly as I expected, this is good. I started my shift early this morning by three quarters of an hour and was able to run a detailed sensor scan of the Class 11 Nebula 7654-Delta and matched the data against that of the last Starfleet scan. It has shrunk 0.8% of total mass and contracted by 1.2% of total area. The field is denser that before but can likely be attributed by gravitational shift caused by a passing comet that came through the region a week ago. It left a vapour trail that has also reacted to form a compound that I could not find in the Federation Database. A form of Sirillium Hydro Fluoride that has a refraction differential two points higher than should be expected. I theorise that this is caused by both free electrons from metallic compounds within the nebula as well as the structure formed by the molecules themselves. They are very large but bond quite closely in a loose mass. While observing this loose mass steadily grew in size and as it does so it started to refract at an even higher rate. It is however very unstable and after reaching a critical mass of two milligrams the structure disintegrated creating trace amounts of radiation. I have catalogued this data and tagged it for future investigation. While unlikely this substance that reacts differently than standard induced Sirillium Hydro Fluoride may have practical applications.

My duty shift was uneventful I carried out a range of passive and active scans both on my own and as requested from the bridge. Most of this space route is well catalogued, I have however picked up an unknown debris cloud and a stray high speed asteroid, close to our current course. With long range scans in hand of both which show trace amounts of Titanium and Dilithium I have submitted a request for a course alteration to Lieutenant Barel. While overall it very unimportant when compared to our current mission it is of interest. I would be interested in finding out how the asteroid reached its current speed. Much faster than should be expected from a standard impact or gravitational pull. When my shift ended I worked on several theories as to how it could reach such a speed as well as locating other references. The asteroid for now is listed as Object R45983 in this sector and the location of the debris listed as Object R45984. Both have be logged to be transmitted to Federation Central Cartography.

I spent four hours at the reserve station while working on this and thought about carrying on in stellar cartography suite, since its empty during Gamma Shift. However I was feeling rather tired. Again I find myself considering oral chemical stimulants, coffee to alertness pills. Again I don't think its a good idea. It might well be a bad thing to be adding unneeded agents to my chemical make up. Tomorrow night I am on the bridge during the Gamma Shift for the second time, I look forward to it. On that note I am think of requesting for further tactical training. While I am not a solider I do think I can make a passable tactical operator on the bridge, should the situation require it. I fear my academy training may not be enough.

As a last note before I go to sleep. I do feel sad that Lieutenant McCarthy has become sick, I had my first meeting with her at the end of the week. Something I wasn't looking forward to. On hearing what happened to her I have considered if I should read up on detailed internal scanning techniques. While I do have only limited medical training I am somewhat of an expert of detecting things. It might be a useful overlap that I should consider. It might let me spend more time working as well.
