Captain's Log, Stardate 67227.4

After many days of travel, we have finally arrived at Rojar 861 alongside USS Venture. Our first scans of the system were very promising and it seems that the initial reports of the solar system's composition were indeed accurate. The network of planets and satellites appears to be very intricate, and I am pleased and honored to be part of the first Starfleet crew to survey and explore this celestial treasure trove.

Our arrival, however, was not without spectacle. As we began probe reconnaissance of the solar system, we detected strange ionized gas emissions from the far side of the sun. As we investigated further, we realized that the phenomenon was not naturally-occurring, but was instead a rarely-seen race of non-corporeal beings which we identified as Calamarain. There is not much in the Starfleet database about the species, but fortunately our El-Aurian chief intelligence officer was able to provide us with great insight into the creatures' behavior.

After some debate, I decided to bring Galileo closer to allow our scientists to observe the Calamarain in their natural state. We soon discovered that there were not just one Calamarain, but two...and they appeared to be in the process of mating. Quite exciting, I must say. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to conceal our presence, the Calamarain detected and scanned us, then promptly aborted their reproductive cycle. Not wanting to upset or disturb them any further, I ordered Galileo to retreat and continue our survey of the system. I was saddened that we were not able to witness the first recorded births of these creatures, but we were nevertheless able to collect a great amount of data which I recently transmitted to Starfleet's Scientific Corps. They are quite pleased with our discovery and observation, and will be updating the Federation database with our most recent information and footage.

On a bit of a more troubling note, recent intelligence reports in some of the neighboring sectors have revealed trace amounts of tachyon emissions and residual antiprotons. The readings have been sporadic, but all indications point towards a cloaked Romulan vessel, or possibly multiple vessels. This area of space is widely unexplored and it is conceivable that there are Romulan warships in the nearby vicinity, possibly exploring this region of space like we are. Starfleet was wise to send us a Galaxy Class escort as a deterrent to possible conflict, but we nevertheless must remain vigilant and prepare for all possible situations.

Computer, end log.
