Death Comes Knocking

Posted on 04 Apr 2024 @ 7:21am by Senior Chief Petty Officer Goldie Brown

330 words; about a 2 minute read

Goldie at her small desk for several minutes, staring at the console before finally saying, "Computer, start log."

When it chimed that it was ready, she took a slow, deep breath. "John Hollenday is dead. Again. I wasn't on a ship with him when he and Mimi died the first time, but I heard about it. I thought…hoped…that we could send them back to fix this mess and there'd be no war. That John and Mimi could marry, have Asha, find the Nakomi home world, live together in peace. Even with all the pushback, I still thought it was possible. But now…he helped save us."

She took a long, slow breath to control herself. She'd done enough crying. "I can't even imagine what Mimi and Asha are feeling right now. It's not fair." She slapped her hand on the desk. It helped her feel better. Sort of.

"On a cynical note, maybe this is what some of the old timers need to see how serious things really are here. Too many of them believe the Federation is responsible for starting the war. That we've been using the cold stations to develop a weapon against the Romulans and Klingons. They don't believe they were all dismantled shortly after the old Gal left. Or that we've done everything we could think of to make peace. Hell, we even surrendered. Twice. But they wouldn't accept. They want nothing more than extermination."

She took another slow breath. "Maybe we can regroup and get them back to their own time before the next attack. They know we're here. Both of us. There will be more ships, more attacks. All I can hope is that those of us from this time can get the others back. Then it won't matter if they succeed or not, we'll either be dead, or none of this will have happened." She chuckled softly. "Not even this log."

"Computer, save and archive this log." She needed a drink.
