Reflections On the Past

ON

It had been a long time since Marisa thought about the Galileo. She'd had the occasional flash of memory, but her life had been so different than she'd ever imagined that her time on the ship seemed part of a former lifetime.

But recent circumstances changed that. The Galileo-A had been in her thoughts a lot lately—mostly her time under Lirha Saalm. She still didn't like to think of her short stint under Morgan Tarin. The woman didn't understand scientists and thought Starfleet officers should be treated like old army recruits: break them down and build them up to be a unified fighting team that didn't think or act outside the box. It had been that very thinking that helped them survive the Latari system.

Marisa sighed. that had been a lifetime ago, and one she thought far behind her. She looked out the viewport at the stars streaming by. Choices and opportunities. She'd made hers, and had no regrets. In fact, the best thing she ever did was walk away from the Galileo to be with Luke. It was hard at first as he worked to regain his health and his memories, but that time also brought them closer together and now, she couldn't  imagine life without him, or their children.

Her children—their children—were safe with her family on a small colony far from the current conflict. If things didn't change, they might be able to have a semi-normal life, but she and Luke wouldn't be a part of it because it meant they failed.

But there was always hope. She'd seen that time and again over the years. Hope because she stood with the man she loved now more than ever, and hope with the captain she thought never to see again. And hope that this one mission against impossible odds could turn back the tide and save humanity.

But if not… There was always that possibility. But if not, she and Luke would face this together. And in the end, that would still be a personal victory because they tried.

Marisa sighed again and turned from the viewport. She could give herself this moment of reflection, but there was still much to do. She'd spent a good deal of time reviewing key events in the war with an eye to how it started so she would better understand how it could be changed. If it could be changed. Luke was a brilliant tactician, and the captain was the best they'd ever worked with. She wanted her science to be good enough, and for that, she had relied on data from colleagues both in and out of the Federation.

She stopped by her computer, half tempted to write a personal log, but she decided against it. Putting anything into a log or message was too dangerous. She'd left messages for the kids, along with everything that mattered to her, with her family. Everything but Luke. Even now, in this, he was still her future and that gave her hope.

She smiled and headed for the door. It was time to let go of memories and see if once more, this team could pull out a miracle.
