Healing Takes Time

Posted on 30 Nov 2021 @ 7:35am by Commander Marisa Wyatt

335 words; about a 2 minute read

Marisa sat in a comfortable chair; the lights dim to suit her mood. "Computer, start log."

"It's been a while since I did a personal log—mostly because I was avoiding it. The past few months have been much like an old earth book I read once. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. "

She paused for a long moment, thinking.

"I fell in love. For a while, I thought it was reciprocated. Then I was part of an away team to one of the Latari colonies. Most of what happened is classified. Most of the colonists were killed in a massive geological event. We almost didn't make it off the planet. The few survivors helped us repair our runabout enough to make orbit. Because of Captain Saalm we were eventually able to save 1500 colonists. I was stuck on another one of the ships in our fleet for a while. When I got back to the Galileo, I learned that there had been some…differences of opinion with other members of the fleet and Luke had closed himself off. I wanted to talk, but he'd isolated himself except for his old friends. And then there was an accident. He lost his short-term memory. It was like he died. The Luke I knew died, but he was still there physically."

This was harder than she expected, but as a counselor, Marisa knew it was important to get it out.

"He's recovering, but he's still not over what happened after Captain Saalm left. I hope, in time, he will be, but he will never care for me. I've resigned myself to that, but I still have a way to go before I heal."

She lay her head back against the chair, thinking. Then she shook her head. "Computer, end log and delete."

She wouldn't forget what happened over the past six months, but right now, she was still not quite ready to talk about it. Not even in a log.
