Odd People

"I've met my fair share of strange people. And by strange, I mean completely alien. I've met people who look like giant insects or lizards. I've even been around during a conversation with a sapient rock."

Azra sat at her desk, data disks stacked neatly on one corner. She'd finished compiling a number of training reports, and sent them off to the Captain. The crew was well prepared, but there were some stunning gaps in their preparations. Gaps it was her job to help fill.

"Today I met possibly the strangest person I've ever come across. His name is Heinu Retief. He's Galileo's botanist. He's a human, from southern Africa. That's not odd, but he doesn't seem to have any ambition or drive."

She shook her head bewilderedly. "He'll do the drills, and he did pretty well, but when I asked him what he wanted to accomplish by joining Starfleet, he just shrugged and said that there was good food to be had in the fleet. That's it. I asked if he had any interest in advancing in rank, or taking on new positions. Nope. Everyone I've met seems to have some driving ambition. Everyone except Heinu Retief."

"I need to figure this guy out."
