Getting Away From It All

453 words; about a 2 minute read

Marisa didn't want to go back to her bare apartment after the verdict in Saalm's Court Martial. It seemed just another nail in the coffin of the Galileo crew. Without their Commanding Officer, was there any chance of the crew getting back together? She didn't think so.

She'd resigned herself to the idea that it would be a while before she'd be able to go back to counseling and had started updating her science and teaching resume. She'd taught before joining Starfleet. She could teach again. There was always somewhere that needed a good archaeologist and historian--especially one with field experience. Pete said he'd give her a referral, if she needed it. The problem was, she wasn't quite ready to give up on Starfleet. She wanted to wait and see what Starfleet Command decided first. Until Admiral Constantine's verdict, she'd hoped to be assigned to whatever ship Saalm was given next. Now, she was rethinking her civilian resume.

Still, the waiting was driving her slowly crazy. She needed to get away, to do something other than wander around San Francisco and visit museums. Maybe a weekend camping would get her mind off herself and her friends.

She decided to buy herself a good backpack and fill it with camping gear and clothing, then find some place she hadn't been to. She could easily replicate what she needed, but there were so many new options that a camping shop would be a much better idea.

She soon found the perfect place. It had equipment, gear, and clothing, each on a different floor. She spent over an hour wandering around looking at the latest gadgets and tech for the weekend camper. Then she grabbed an air cart and began to load it up. Since green was her favorite color, she used that as her base. Backpack, sleeping bag, foam mat and tent were quickly put in the cart. The fact that the dark green she chose would blend in to most forest settings was a bonus. That took the longest time because she liked an old-fashioned camping experience and was rather picky. The rest of her gear was easier as she had simple tastes and preferred to cook over an open fire.

Two hours later, she had everything neatly packed away and held a small PADD loaded with maps and destinations. Three days, she promised herself. Three days to get lost from the world. Then she would decide what she wanted to do next. She hoped there would be news of a new trial. Or word of a new assignment.

There was only one thing she wanted to do first: find a restaurant and eat lunch. Might as well start off with a good meal.
