1,001 words; about a 5 minute read

Location: Romulan colony on Minos Tureth Moon colony 1
aka New Romulus

The door hissed closed and Soral sighed. A moment of respite from the zoo that was his current negotiation. Romulans, Ferengi, Bolian, and Betazoid Ambassadors acting like coiled snakes waiting to strike at one another. The only reason he’d agreed to help was because of Letek. The little Ferengi had something Soral needed and he hoped that helping the Ferengi would in turn earn him a favour, a rare occurrence when it came to the Ferengi.

The door whooshed open. Soral didn’t bother to look up. Only one other person had the code to enter his office. Kathyria Seleya T’elis his trusted executive assistant and bodyguard; half Romulan, half Vulcan, all firecracker. He suppressed a smile. He heard the shimmer of the replicator and saw the cup laid in front of him.

“Lavender Green tea to relax you,” T’elis said as she place the cup in front of him.

He sighed. She always did know his moods. It was why she was so valuable. She’d been the only person who could deal with his moods and she had a sixth sense about his needs and wants beyond the telepathy that was shared by their common Vulcan side. It was funny, his cousin had predicted the entry of such a rare diamond in his life and he’d instantly known it was Kathyria, or Seleya as he preferred to call her. Her middle name, one which she didn’t allow anyone but him to use, had always attracted him. Mount Seleya on Vulcan was after all a place where he had his summer home. “Thank you,” he simply said.

Seleya smiled. “Welcome.” She sat down across from him and studied him, “You are on vacation from you duties. Why these negotiations? Starfleet has no benefit in them.”

He sighed and took a moment to sip his tea. “The Bolians and the Betazoids are member planets.”

“Yes,” Seleya countered. “But not in this. It’s a simple…” Her eyes narrowed. “Letek. You have been collecting information on him for months now...he's the reason.”

He did smile this time, but only briefly. He could never hide things from her. “Yes.”

“What is it you are after?” Seleya asked.

“Information,” he said. He would have said more but the door chimed.

Seleya went into what he called her bodyguard mode. She pulled her tricorder out and scanned the door. “Speak of the demon.” She closed her tricorder. “No weapons he’s alone.” She hit the open button and looked down at the Ferengi standing there.

Letek studied the tall Vulcan with obvious lust. She, in turn, studied him with disgust.

“You may leave us Ms. T’elis,” Soral stood and walked over to her hoping to get her out the door before she cut off Letek’s lobes.

She huffed and left.

Soral bowed. “Come in Ambassador Letek.”

“A female in clothing…I will never understand that," Letek said.

Soral said nothing but motioned for Letek to sit. “Can I get you something…perhaps some Scarab liquor?”

Letek’s lobes perked up. “Yes…Yes I think I’ll take a big glass.”

Soral again supressed a smile. Letek had been known for his love of Scarab liquor. A horrible drink that made Soral sick for days but nonetheless he would have one now with Letek to ease things along. He poured two glasses and sat down handing one to Letek. “I am honoured by your company.”

The Ferengi studied him. “Scarab liquor now and the bottle you had sent to me and in the negotiations you saved me from being blindsided and loosing profit.” Letek sighed. “Rule of acquisition number 59 says that free advice is seldom cheap. So tell me Ambassador Varro what is it you want in return for this fine glass and bottle of liquor and the advice you gave me during the negotiations?”

Varro smiled. Direct and to the point. “I need information.”

Letek nodded his head. “Rule number 79. Beware of Vulcan greed for knowledge. That rule exists because when a Vulcan asks a Ferengi for information that information usually ends up costing the Ferengi more than the Vulcan.”

Varro raised an eyebrow at the man. “Trust me Ambassador this will cost me more then it will you.”

They talked for an hour. Letek finally got up. “Well Ambassador Varro. I will of course try to get you the information you requested and I will try to locate this artefact you seek. The Ferengi rules also say that good customers are hard to find and you must treasure them like latinum. You just became a good customer.”

Varro inclined his head and walked Letek to the door. They shook hands and Letek left. Varro let the door shut and headed back to his chair. Feeling beyond tired he fell into it letting his exhaustion take hold of him.

Within a few minutes the door hissed openen again. T’elis, who’d been watching Letek leave came in and she looked at Varro. “A…are you alright?”

He looked up at her, pale an sweating.

"You drank the scarab swill didn't you," she said.

He tried to speak but suddenly his eyes went wide and he rolled off the chair.

Seleya reacted quickly grabbing a garbage bin which only had paper and emptying it on the floor. She held the bucket under Varro's mouth and turned away as he brought up his breakfast, lunch, and last nights dinner." She rubbed his back gently in an attempt to sooth him. Damned idiot that he was. She couldn't believe he drank that scarab crap. It always made him sick for days!
