1,196 words; about a 6 minute read

"No, I don't want you to bother the Captain with this....yet." Will paced the room as he continued his low result conversation with the computer, "I'll let him know when I've got something but as of now Greg could be anywhere. I just need you to forward me any Galileo reports that I am cleared to read."

"ALL AUTHORIZED GALILEO REPORTS HAVE BEEN FORWARDED. ADDITIONAL REPORTS REQUIRE AUTHORIZATION BY SHIP'S CAPTAIN."

Will sat back down at his desk chair. "Son of a bitch." He thought for a minute. Alright, stop over-reacting. Things happen. People get busy. He's fine, he'll contact you when he can. There is no need to freak out over this. I mean, I know he's your only brother but still.....crap.

"Alright, computer. I need you to contact a ship for me. Captain Samuel Mitchell, Hawk Freight Transportation, freighter SS R. Scott." Will ordered, hoping his cousin could shed some light on the issue.

"PLEASE STAND BY"

After what felt like an eternity, as Will sat trying to calm himself down, the computer spoke again.

"CONNECTION ESTABLISHED WITH FREIGHTER: SS R. SCOTT."

"Put it on my terminal." Will ordered. A few seconds later, a young man who bore a resemblance to the two brothers appeared on screen."

"Hey Will! Good to hear from you. What's up?" Sam asked.

"Hey cuz. I was just calling to see if you've heard from Greg recently."

Sam thought for a moment as he picked up a cup of coffee and took a drink. Then he shook his head as he set the cup down. "I can't say that I have. Last I heard from him was a few weeks ago. Why?"

Will sat forward, "Well crap. I've been having trouble getting into contact with him. His ship has gone after some distress signal, he's not answering any calls, and this damn computer isn't helping me at all."

"AS NOTED BEFORE: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CAN BE REQUESTED VIA AUTHORIZATION FROM SHIP'S CAPTAIN...."

"Oh, shut up. You just like making my life difficult." Will turned back to the screen. "I was just hoping he has contacted you in the past few days."

"Is everything ok?" Sam said, his face beginning to show signs of worry.

"Well...I got a call earlier from Doctor Morganstern, the counselor who helped Greg after the Romulan Neutral Zone incident."

"Morganstern, isn't she the counselor that Greg..." Sam began.

"Yes, but he's never actually confirmed that." Will responded.

"Oh come on, Will. Between the three of us, you being married and me being in a relationship, which one of us would James Bond the doctor just to get a clean bill of health?" Sam laughed, "He was cleared after a couple of weeks. Not really a significant amount of time."

"Yah, I know. I'm still pissed about that. He needed help, and he skipped the process completely."

"Will, he appears to be fine since last time I talked to him. Same old personality." Sam responded.

"You don't know him like I do. He's hiding something."

Sam thought for a few minutes. "You're right about that. But he's a Security Officer. He can be busy. Remember when he was on the police department?" He smiled, "Besides, Greg's always been the lady's man. Remember back in High School when..."

"How did we get on this conversation again?" Will asked.

"Right, sorry. Got sidetracked. No, I haven't heard anything from him." Sam pulled up a PADD. "Where was he last time he reported?"

"The bit of information I pulled, the Galileo was heading to the Paulson Nebula to respond to a distress signal."

Sam typed in some information. "Paulson, Paulson, Paulson, ok got it." He frowned, "This may explain it."

"What?"

"The Nebula has a history of communication issues. It can also screw with sensors of ships heading through the area." Sam set the PADD down, "I thought the name looked familiar. My employers sent us out a memo dictating that we have to avoid the area unless under Starfleet escort. Apparently the surrounding area has seen some pirate activity as well."

"Pirates?" Will sat forward, surprised.

"Nothing too major. Greg's on a Starfleet vessel. It would be suicide to attack. It's my ship we have to worry about."

"Can you get anything else on it?" Will asked.

"The information I pulled was from the LCARS database. You can pull it up as well as I can. The other info from my employers, I can send to you. I'm surprised you haven't heard of the Nebula."

"I...." The thought had honestly never occurred to Will. "...may have entirely forgot to do that."

"Yah, how'd you make Lieutenant Commander again?" Sam joked.

"I've been very busy lately. I'm not on a cargo ship. I've got full responsibilities." Will joked.

"That hurts." Sam smiled, pretending to be offended. Then he sat forward and his face turned serious again. "Look, if it makes you feel any better, I'll have us get as close as we safely can and I'll keep an eye out for him on our way to our next delivery. I'll also have other ships look for them."

"Thank you." Will said.

"But I'm telling you , he's most likely fine. Just busy." Sam smiled. "Worst case scenario: the distress signal was a Klingon trap, his ship was attacked and the Captain blew it up, explaining your lack of communication with it, and Greg's been captured and thrown in a cell."

Will stood at the screen blankly for a few seconds.

"What?" Sam asked.

"Sam, that was....very specific."

"You know my hunches don't always turn out correctly. Remember when I put forward the theory that Ambassador Spock and that Romulan mining vessel weren't killed in the black hole, but instead thrown back in time, just before Captain Kirk was born and caused a change in the current timeline as we know it, therefore making an alternate universe?"

"Yah, I'm gonna go before you give me a headache." Will responded.

"I'll keep an eye open. I promise." Sam smiled. "Don't worry. And you tell his girlfriend that Greg is good at looking out for himself. He should be ok."

"I don't think she's his girlfriend." Will answered.

"That sucks. Because from the way he described her, they would be a great couple." Sam nodded at Will. "Take care man."

"You too Sam." Will said.

The screen shut off. Will sat in silence for a few moments pondering what had happened. The conversation had done little to make him feel better, but at least he knew he wasn't the only one looking. At least he knew he could learn what happened to his brother easier than if he just investigated himself. Where are you, bro? Will thought.

After a few minutes, Will stood up and turned to walk out the door. He had made a decision to report this to the Captain, as being a Starfleet vessel it would be crucial to keep an eye open for the Galileo.

Will took a deep breath to calm himself, then walked out the door.
