Soral had just finished his meditation. It was late and the ship was quiet. He’d decided to take a walk. The meditation didn’t go well. In fact he’d been restless. He’d thought about Braxton who’d stayed on the planet to help, about T’elis who’d also stayed on the planet to help. He…felt… well for the first time in a long time he’d let go of his Vulcan shield and he’d felt alone. He sighed at his foolishness. As he walked he heard a sound that drew his attention.

Eviess had tried to sleep. In fact she’d tried even a medicated sleep but dreams and rest would not find her. Her mind was on Splendora who was dead and gone now and all that had happened. For her it was like losing a sister. She’d kept herself calm while she worked, was even able to find solace in it but in unguarded and solitary moments like this she let the weight of it all crush her. She hated being here, hated the memories being on this ship was bringing up. She blended in, with her hair down. She looked Klingon, she tried to act Klingon, and her long hair hid her ears well so she was mostly left alone.

Somewhere about an hour ago she’d given up on sleeping and had headed to find a bit of peace. She’d crawled into the airlock and was now staring at the passing stars. They calmed her a bit but they also triggered something in her and she began to weep. She tried to keep her crying silent as possible but it had not worked. She heard footsteps and tried to wipe her face but was not in time. The figure rounded the corner. She stood feeling a bit startled and met the familiar eyes of Soral Varro. She’d always been fascinated by his eyes; green one moment, ice blue at another.

“Eviess?” Varro raised his eyebrow in that Vulcan fashion. “Are you alright?”

She sighed and let herself slide back down the wall until she was once again sitting on the floor. “Fine.” She said but turned away to look at the stars. Those eyes, that were now a crystal blue, would see too much. They always had.

Varro sighed and motioned for the spot next to her, “May I join you?”

A small smile toughed at her lips and she swiped the remainder of her tears. “Sure.”

Varro sat down. He let the silence between them stretch for a moment, “Are you alright?”

Eviess said yes but shook her head. She sighed and then tried again. “I will be okay. I’m just remembering Splendora.” She sighed again.

“Ah yes, you told me about her. It is normal to grieve. As I recall you two were quite close.”

Eviess looked at Varro. “Yes, we were. I’m sorry Varro, I always seem to be a mess when we meet don’t I?” She looked at the IDIC symbol that was tattooed on her inner right wrist.

Varro gently took her wrist and traced the symbol. “The IDIC is infinite diversity in infinite combinations. That phrase also refers to shows of emotion, our thoughts, our fears, they are all diverse, all valid, and all special and work to make us unique.”

Eviess studied him for a moment with a clear look that said are you kidding me? “Hello Pot, I’m Kettle.”

A hint of a smile played across his face.

Eviess smiled and wiped the tears from her cheeks. She looked out the window as the stars flew by.

“This,” Varro motioned to the ship that surrounded them, “can’t be easy for you.”

Eviess shrugged. “It’s not. I haven't slept but for a few hours since the Galileo..." Her voice trailed off.

Varro stood and held out a hand to her. "Come on then, I will make you lavender green tea and you will tell me what happened and then you will try and rest. You will take that metal board the Klingons call a bed and I will take the metal board the Klingons call a floor."

Eviess smiled. She took his hand and let him help her up. She then took his arm as if it were the most natural thing.

Varro patted her hand. "It will be alright."

They walked a while until they reached the room assigned to Varro. He entered the code and the door slid open. Both walked inside. Varro excused himself and came back carrying a T-shirt and a pair of boxers. "Why don't you go shower and I will prepare the tea."

Not feeling the least bit tired Eviess did has he asked. Twenty minutes later she emerged from the shower with her hair dripping and freshly changed into the borrowed T-shirt and boxers. She found Varro seated at the table with two steaming mugs in front of him. She quickly joined him taking one of the mugs and wrapping her hands around it, letting the heat warm her. She focused her attention on the plum of steamy white smoke rising from the mug. Closing her eye she inhaled the fresh lavender sent.

Varro observed her. "Feeling better?"

"If only," she said.

The two stayed silent for a while and then began to talk. Eviess told him about Splendora, about her life since they last saw one another and he, in turn, told her about his life since they last saw one another keeping some much prized details to himself.

After hours of talking, in the early morning hours, both fell asleep. Eviess on the bed, Varro on the floor by the little window that shone the light of the stars upon him.

Both exhausted from the shadows of their past, as well as the trials of the last few weeks and the uncertainty of the future.
