The ride in the turbolift was tense; Victoria was about to meet her new XO, Commander Jonathan Holliday, for the first time and she was, admittedly, very nervous. She didn't like being nervous; nervousness usually made for awkward meetings that didn't end well.

She fidgeted with her PADD and tried her best to look as competent and unaffected as possible. Stepping forward as the lift's doors opened, she walked briskly down the corridor to the Commander's office and pressed the chime.

"Come." Came the call from the other side. With his duty shift set to begin in less than 30 minutes, the XO had busied himself completing final preparations and reports before leaving for the Bridge.

Sat in his usual chair behind his desk, both the screens in front and behind of him were populated with anything from ship's schematics all the way through to the menu being served in the mess hall, and the latest crew rotations. Being XO of a ship meant having to have a lot of fingers in a lot of pies at any one time to keep the Galileo functioning.

Victoria stepped inside and handed the Commander her PADD, silently thanking God that her hands had stopped shaking.

"Here are my transfer orders, sir."

It seemed that a new officer had joined Galileo's ranks - the woman stood in front of him was totally unrecognisable to the XO as having been a memeber of the crew before they had left for this mission. Taking the PADD from her hand, John reviewed the orders.

"Ahh...transfer from our Galaxy-class neighbour I see...welcome aboard Lieutenant."

"Thank you, sir," she said, her eyes wandering around the room again, trying to take it all in. It was nice, this ship. It was surprising how similar and yet different the Venture and the Galileo were. It would be interesting finding her way around on this one, after having gotten used to the Venture.

"Galileo is a tad on the smaller side compared to the Venture - it usually takes people a little time to adjust to being in tighter confines - do you think you will have any problems with a more...intimate ship experience."

John knew that some crew members who had come from larger vessels struggled to adapt to smaller ships - he had gone through the same trials when he had first moved to the Galileo, and he had been blessed with the quarters of an XO - large on the Galileo, but pretty small when compared to the equivalent on a Galaxy or Sovereign class vessel.

She thought for a moment and shook her head. "No, sir, I don't think it'll be a problem at all. There's a better chance of me getting to know the crew better; some of them are species I've never even seen before, and I'm anxious to talk to them." Victoria almost smiled, still cautious about seeming over-enthusiastic. She hated those kinds of people and she definitely didn't want to become one herself.

"There's certainly a diverse population aboard ship. The melting pot of Starfleet civilisations." John replied with a chuckle. It hadn't occurred to him quite how extensive the number of species represented on Galileo was since their last refit - a couple of dozen new crew members had reported aboard, each with their own backgrounds and personalities to adapt to.

"Your department head will be eager to meet her latest team member - check in with her and with Sickbay within the next 48 hours Lieutenant. Is there anything else I can help you with?"

She shook her head, no. "Not at the moment, sir, but I'll come to you if I think of anything." This time she smiled widely, relieved that it was over and happy it had gone so well.

"You know where I am if you need me. Dismissed Lieutenant." He replied, outstretching his hand to pass over the now-authorised transfer orders. There was certainly enough work to be done, and short chats were the order of the day.
