Preparing the ship to deploy both support craft and away teams was expected to be a substantial commitment of resources for the Galileo, and the level of administration required was almost as extensive. As First Officer, the responsibility for preparing such tasks of course fell to Jonathan who found himself temporarily occupying the Captain's chair in the Ready Room surrounded by PADDs until the door chimed.
"Yes? Come!"
Amril walked in as the doors opened. He was wearing a particularly pleasant smile as he walked up to the commander's desk. "Ah, Commander Holliday, quite an exciting day, isn't it? I'm sure you are as eager as I am to begin exploring this system. Rojar II and its moons are absolutely fascinating."
The arrival of the Vorta Operations officer wasn't exactly the break from work that Holliday had been thinking about - going down to the armoury to check over half a dozen or so phaser rifles was much more attractive an idea than a chat with the Vorta, but nevertheless, the XO had to entertain this somewhat unhelpful interruption, at least for now.
"Mr. Amril. Yes... yes it is... although as you can clearly see I am quite busy, so if you wouldn't mind skipping to the point here?"
"Oh, of course, Commander," Amril replied smoothly, moving right on to his purpose. "This satellite with its ancient civilization is the first thing we have encountered on this mission which truly fascinates me. I would very much like to participate in the project to study it."
"You mean you'd like to be assigned to an away team?" John questioned with a puzzled look on his face. He wouldn't have thought that a Vorta, a species bred for administration and diplomacy would really want to dirty their hands on an away mission into possibly hostile territory, especially if that territory had once been the victim of a Borg attack.
"What makes it so appealing to you?"
"Joining the away team sounds like an excellent idea," Amril declared, "I'd also like to be involved with evaluating what we learn back on the ship. I am not sure I can say why it is so fascinating, but it is. I want to know what happened to the civilization on the surface. It seems inadequet to dismiss the matter with a solution as readily as Mister Liyar did. If there is more to know, I would enjoy aiding in the recovery of that knowledge."
"I will... see what I can do in that case. I always promote the idea of our senior officers taking part in away missions. Brief yourself on Starfleet protocols for these kinds of away missions and report to the transporter room when summoned."
John was more than a little impressed that the Vorta would willingly volunteer for an away mission - his species was not one that the XO would have usually marked out as being particuarly serving of others - outside of the Dominion anyway.
"Why thank you, Commander," Amril said, dipping his head to acknowledge the man's words. "I will be more than prepared."
"I would expect nothing else. Now, if anyone is going to be going on any away missions any time soon I have to plough through this mountain of paperwork... if you don't mind giving me the room back to myself again?"
John smiled before pointing his arm towards the pile of PADDs that were gathering on his desk, all equally filled with requisition orders and data relating to their upcoming mission.
"Of course, Commander," Amril said, giving a sort of half bow as he backed up and then turning around to leave.
Returning the bow with a nod, the Commander turned his head back to his work, sighing with relief as the doors closed behind the Vorta knowing that from this moment on, the XO would simply be able to get on with his work.
"Now... where was I?"
