What's the worst that could happen?

ON:

"It's the eve of the away mission, but there's no way I'm getting any sleep..." Scarlet Blake sighed as she rubbed her hands over her face, keeping them there for a long moment.

"This mission has fubar written all over it," she threw her hair pin onto the desk with a purse of her lips, sitting back heavily in her chair.

"A station of this kind...the personnel going silent..." she said quietly, shaking her head slowly as the screen filmed her log. "Judging by the chain of bad luck we've been having when it comes to missions like this, we're definitely going to be entering a circle of hell on that station, the only question is which one."

She sipped her drink, the ice rattling, but the sound only annoyed her because it reminded her that it wasn't scotch on the rocks. "I'd feel better if we were all going into this at our best, but I can't say that.

"Early mornings, extra training, irregular meeting times, no one's bright eyed and bushy tailed. The morale, with shoreleave cut short, unpopular PT sessions and a friction filled inspection, isn't great. I feel like I've done little more than play devil's advocate and diplomat to try and keep the peace over the last week. This isn't the set up I'd choose for a mission like this."

She sipped her drink, her movements small and tight, showing her anger at the mess of it. "I'll be leaving the ship to Rice as XO, and with Turell required for the away mission, that leaves the ship with virtually no dedicated security. Given the fact we're not alone out here, that does not reassure me."

"And then there's Lily. She's been poorly this week, nothing serious, but instead of being there to help her feel better, I've barely spent two minutes with her. And I have to leave her behind...not at all confident with how things are going to hold out, dependent on the kindness of people whose nerves are already frayed."

Scarlet shook her head with a frown, looking into her drink with resignation. She sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I swear, if I go over to that station and there are rock monsters or aliens waiting to shave my head or cardassian zombies, I'm going to take over the ship and declare it the free republic of pirates..." she sighed throwing her glass down on to the desk with a weak chuckle, shutting off the recording.
