Personality & Traits

General Overview A relatively young member of the Ba’ku, Karras was inspired by the Federation crew that saved his village to venture into the Off-world to see and experience some of the wonders of the unknown. Choosing to join Starfleet as a means of exploration and to contribute to those around him, Karras ultimately decided on the career path of Counselor. Although everything moves at a far more hectic pace than the one to which he was accustomed, he is finding his footing and enjoying his experience.
Strengths Patience – A natural attribute for a member of a long-lived species, it is in invaluable asset as a Counselor. He understands that others move at their own pace, and that most things take time.

Creativity – Karras was nearing the end of his apprenticeship as a Sculptor when he decided to leave his home world, and he has continued to foster his love of and appreciation for all art forms. This skill has helped him see things from a variety of perspectives and approaches and led to a specialization in Art Therapy.

Open Minded and Unbiased – Growing up completely removed from interstellar politics and cultural prejudice, Karras can meet others where they are without attaching any preconceived judgements or assumptions.
Weaknesses Combat – Karras is not a fighter and has no interest in becoming one. He knows that in times of emergency he may be required to defend himself and others as a matter of duty, but there will be no songs sung of his prowess in battle.

Technology – While he has accepted the use of technology as a part of living away from his home, Karras has no interest in learning the intricacies of the technologies surrounding him. He mastered just enough to pass his courses at the Academy and to function in day-to-day life.

Guileless – Coming from a society that values openness and honesty, Karras is not able to effectively bluff or deceive. He can stay quiet and keep a confidence, but misdirection is not in his skillset.
Ambitions Karras has no concern for rank or position or title; he wants to see and experience the “Offland” and find a way to contribute to others in the process before ultimately returning to his home.
Hobbies & Interests Clay sculpture, swimming, meditation. Karras is open to trying new things but feels he hasn’t had enough time to really become invested in anything new. He has, however, developed a fondness for learning about holidays as he feels it provides true insight into a culture to examine what they celebrate. He is currently studying the Earth holiday, Christmas.
Orientation Homosexual
Language(s) Spoken Ba’ku, Federation Standard

Personal History Karras was born in the idyllic village of Ba’ku in 2305, ten years after the Son’a rebellion and exile. His parents were both artisans; his mother Regan a stone mason, and his father Meryn a weaver. He grew up knowing nothing but the peaceful pace of life of his home world. He was a willful child, but not disobedient – at least, not intentionally. He would often wander away from the village, enticed by the unseen wonders just over the next hill, and sometimes find himself lost. His family would always find him, but despite their kind admonitions and his sincere desire to not worry his parents, young Karras would soon find himself in another unexplored meadow or valley.

This calm and relatively uneventful existence was what Karras knew for the first few decades of his life. He found he had an aptitude for sculpture, and after experimenting with different mediums he discovered an affinity for working with clay. He began to undertake serious study of the subject that would become his role in the village. While focused on his craft, he continued to develop the other skills of living in a community unburdened by technology, such as basic gardening, the creation of simple tools and clothing, and assisting the community with larger tasks and projects. Shortly after his 30th year, he felt the first flush of young love when he became enamored young baker named Jarin. Although his affections were not returned, it was a pleasant experience.

All of this changed on the Day of Lightning in 2375, when the artificial man appeared in their village and exposed the “Duck Blind” that was being used by Off-worlders to observe and study his people. Events moved very quickly after that, and Karras found those days to be the most harrowing of his young life. There was apparently a conspiracy to relocate the Ba’ku, and everything he had known would have been lost if not for the valiant actions of a Starfleet Captain and his crew. These Federation officers managed to not only save a people and their planet, but to reunite the Ba’ku with their lost children, who it turned out were the Son’a. This selflessness made a deep impression on Karras, as did the knowledge that there was more to see in this universe, and that the people who rescued them got to see these things every day.

These thoughts stayed with Karras in the aftermath of the event, and he felt a longing to see the Off-world begin to grow in his heart. His apprenticeship began to suffer in light of his efforts to mediate the healing between the Ba’ku and the Son’a who chose to return to the planet. After much deliberation, he decided he wanted to step into the unknown, and through the Federation connections that were established on his planet, Karras applied to Starfleet Academy.
Starfleet History Karras’ time at the Academy was both exhilarating and exhausting. There was so much to see and do, but the pace of life was frenetic and threatened to overwhelm him. To stay grounded, Karras had to make down time a priority to maintain balance and stay prepared for the tasks ahead. Initially he had no idea which division he should place his focus. He had the aptitude for Engineering, but not the interest. Likewise, his near perfect physical condition and mental coordination could have been an asset in Security, but the practicalities of the field were unappealing. Ultimately, he felt led to the Sciences, and specifically the healing and helpful facets of Counseling. He completed his initial coursework at the Academy as a Pre-Med major and continued his education at Starfleet Medical.

This time in San Francisco was filled with more than study. The new friends he made insisted on introducing him to everything their respective cultures had to offer: Klingon opera, Vulcan Kal-toh, Bajoran springball and spring wine. He enjoyed visiting the different points of interest on the planet Earth and the experience of going on romantic dates. While chronologically the eldest of the group, he filled the role of ‘little brother’, and was happy to follow where his friends would lead. They guided him through many firsts, including his first experience with death and grief when a classmate was accidentally lost in a shuttlecraft accident. The sudden death was so jarring that Karras sought counseling himself, and it took some time to come to terms with the loss.

Upon graduation, Karras was assigned to work at Starbase 2, a facility renowned for medical treatment. It was a stationary assignment, but one where he found the unknown coming to him and his colleagues for care. Karras was able to develop and refine his techniques as therapist, aided in no small measure by having the chance to observe (and in some cases, consult) on more extreme conditions that were drawn in by the Starbase’s reputation. He gained more experience in his time there than he would have on a shipboard assignment, and he felt grateful for the opportunity. His friends had all been assigned elsewhere, and while not rude, Karras made the choice to keep to himself during his downtime and enjoy the temporary solitude life on the station made possible. It was during this time that he returned to his art and began to incorporate it into his counseling practice.

His next assignment was to serve as Ship’s Counselor for the USS Bellerophon, an Intrepid class ship. Although Karras was the sole counselor aboard, he was not considered a member of the senior staff and instead reported directly to the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Salok. Salok proved to be an adept mentor, and a thorough department head, ensuring Karras was well trained in triage and first aid to assist in Sickbay when needed. He gained some diplomatic experience as well by helping to entertain visiting dignitaries and their delegations, and occasionally accompanying the captain or first officer on away missions of the like. There had even been a handful of instances he’d been summoned to the bridge to offer his professional opinion and advice. He had also learned to reopen himself to the possibility of new friendships.

When word came that he would be reassigned to a new ship, this time as Chief Counselor and Department Head, Karras reflected that his first assignments had served him well. He had been given the time and opportunity to grow as a counselor and as an officer. Now it was time to see what was next.
