Personal History Coming from a less than traditional family is a point of pride for Topher. He could not have asked for a better upbringing than he got with his two fathers and two older sisters. Never knowing his mother never really bothered him, Topher knew about her, her passing and from a young age was encouraged to visit her grave and remaining family was a way to stay connected and be thankful. While one father was his biological and the other adopted he made no distinction and tried to keep it, so he never knew which was which. To him, one was Dad and the other Pop or Popsicle if he needs something. His sister were typical older sisters, tormented him but loved him dearly and would do anything for him. As they were both a few years older than Topher when he was born, they loved looking after their baby brother and secretly still like to, to this day.

From a young age, Topher knew exactly the type of person he was. He liked fixing things, liked making things; liked pulling things apart to see how they worked; liked flying both remote control toys and anything could get behind the helm of, liked making models of things, and he liked boys. In a way, this was both a good and bad thing. His family knew what he wanted and how to cater for it, and it leads Topher to find his adventures too. Many a time his fathers would be called to the principal’s office of his elementary school for something he had either demolished for parts or created something that caused a mild explosion in the playground. To this day no one lets him forget the time he tried to add a new frictionless surface to the slide that caused someone to fly so far off the slide they got stuck in a tree. Being grounded for such things lead to his love of model making. Usually, he made models from kits of existing ships, sometimes using those parts to make his own, or regularly, he loved the giant robotic suit kind that he could customise.
Middle school saw no real change in Topher; dating became an import part of his life. Towards the end of middle school, he came into his own. While he was more geek than jock, he knew he could still attract the attention of others. His first kiss was with a lab partner under the stairs of the science block. It was at this point when his intelligence shone through. There were times he just had to know more and would spend many an after school asking his teachers about things or studying.
High school was much of the same, more trouble and parties, yet stellar grades, a new boyfriend every other month until his final year. Topher found a kindred soul in Ryan Ashcroft, a bit of a geek like himself but more musical theatre than technological. They did the whole prom and met the parents thing and for once in a long while Topher felt settled, happy and content. And, as all high school romances tend to do, it came to an abrupt end when the school did. Topher was more than happy and content to keep seeing Ryan, heading out to New York when he could, as Ryan had was accepted into AMDA. Ryan, on the other hand, wanted to head out an ‘explore more possibilities’. The pair has not spoken since.

This leads a return to form for Topher at the Academy. Good grades, but now parties, alcohol, and boys. He was beginning to get a bit of a reputation on campus as the party boy who always seemed to pull things together at the last moment and still get top marks. This attracted a crowd of the wrong sort of people who only wanted to be a friend for the parties he threw. He did have one good friend, though, Peter Johansson (who was also studying Engineering). He was the one who saw Topher’s behaviour as a cry for attention and change. He suggested Topher join him in some part time work in a new bar that opened in the Castro District called Glitter. It was a fun and friendly bar that gave Topher a challenge he needed and a new set of skills. It wouldn’t be long until he became a ‘show barman’ with many trick pours and bottle spinning skills to show off. The pair became inseparable and even moved to a small off-campus apartment together on the same street as the bar. It wasn’t long until rumours started that the Engineering/Barman team were an item when in fact they were just very, very close. They would often curl up on the sofa to study together or watch a holomovie. They would always head to their beds, though until one-night Peter took Topher’s hand and they went there together. Nothing happened, nor would for several months, they were quite content in an emotionally supportive relationship.

When things began to get more serious, rumours were flying around the bar that Peter was cheating. Knowing the bar scene, it was just jealous types likely, and Topher brushed it off. They continued to be together as well as the stories until their final year. The night before graduation, Glitter held a large party for some of the departing cadets and their families. Topher was walking around with a ring in his pocket all night, waiting for the right moment to ask Peter to marry him in front of all their friends and family. Alas, Peter was caught in a back booth with a slightly older man’s arm around his shoulders kissing his neck. Never had Topher felt more betrayed. To him, the rest of the evening was a tear filled blur of Peter denying the years of rumours and that moment was with an old friend. While the two broke up, they remain friends and to this day Peter still denies any malice behind his actions. Topher still misses their relationship considerably, resulting in him only focusing on his work and having a string of bad dates and failed relationships.
Starfleet History The Academy wasn’t too much of a challenge for Topher, for his instructors, on the other hand, Topher was the challenge. He constantly questioned, never in front of his class, but always stayed behind out of respect for the teacher. His thirst for knowledge and knowing the intricate workings of everything pushed him to read beyond the syllabus, explore out of the remit and try things in simulations no one expected. He often took on other projects and assisted upper-class men with their studies. He could have pushed himself to complete things and years quicker but was in no rush. Topher enjoyed the stimulating environment of the Academy, having like minds to debate subjects with and challenge his thinking. While here he took a job at a bar just off campus to mix in with Academy life and experience. Topher graduated at the top of his School of Engineering class.

Upon advancing to Ensign, he was assigned to a small Miranda class as his first assignment as an Engineering Officer. It was here he finally got to put all of his knowledge in a real, working and at times, dangerous, environment. It wouldn’t be too long until Topher felt he needed a further challenge and sought out chances for further research until his eventual redeployment or hopefully promotion.

In the form of an opportunity to study in a joint venture between Starfleet and the Advanced Starship Design Bureau a whole new world was opened for Topher that he knew he wanted to pursue.

With his new level of experience, he was promoted to Acting Assitant Chief Engineer in the absence of one aboard the USS Knight assigned to Sol System defence. Topher was thankful for the level of challenge he experienced here. Nonesuch challenge rivalled the fateful day the ship was lost due to a border dispute with a dissonant Cardassian sub-faction in which his ship was assigned to support. This was meant to be a routine mission, like many before it. There were changes, though, and the crew was caught by surprise. Topher lost many friends that day and vowed to continue in their name.
