Physical Appearance

Height 6'1".
Weight 270 pounds.
Hair Color N/A.
Eye Color Light green.
Physical Description 6'1", 270 lbs. Nazhzhalh (commonly known as "Ziyal") is reasonably tall and well muscled. He has no hair, but his skin is made up of a soft feathery down. Ziyal has several ridges and bony lines making up his entire body, fortifying him and providing a natural armor. He has a few antennae sprouted up on top of his head. He has arms and legs (though an abundance of them...he appears to be tripedal, and possess at least four arms) and looks relatively humanoid in structure, except his feet and hands are talon clawed.

His eyes are large and protruding with a light olive color. While Ziyal's facial expressions are largely enigmatic, he appears energetic and subordinate, if a little exuberant. Ziyal has no secondary sex characteristics, making him a pure androgyne. The W'qa'arr as a species have no concept of gender, so Ziyal does not mind being referred to as male. He feels it is a way to make others more comfortable with him (the W'qa'arr have no preconceptions about gender and are not offended by gender references) and W'qa'arr pronouns are too complex for consistent regular translation.

Ziyal wears a modified version of the Starfleet uniform to accommodate his extra appendages. While he is of average humanoid height, he is somewhat larger than a regular humanoid due to his mass and overall width. This uniform is also made of a different fabric to allow his respiratory system a little "breathing room". This uniform fabric is not distinguishable from the regular uniform.
Body Art The W'qa'arr officer wears several jeweled adornments that seem to be embedded within his skin. One forms long and elegant lines along his third arm, in small white crystalline stone markers, like an intricate tattoo. This is a biotechnical implant and provides a translation program capable of expressing his thoughts in a linear fashion. It also contains thought-to-visual holographic interfaces and can connect to computerized systems.

Other Family Thrashexioro th'Vhrthylnyn, known by Ziyal as a r'krx'xe'n - the rough translation being best friend. The literal translation is cliff-hand. The concept in W'qa'arr society is that a r'krx'xe'n is someone you would trust to hold you over the edge of a cliff. Thrash was an Andorian in Ziyal's classes in the Enlisted Academy.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Ziyal is pretty chipper, though it's difficult to get a sense of his enthusiasm and energy from his positively alien countenance. He is always on the move and ready to go. Ziyal likes action and a challenge and is known for being friendly and exuberant, though sometimes his attention drifts and he has a bit of a fascination for aesthetically pleasing individuals.

His motivations and emotions are often hard to figure out, being positively alien in origin, but he seems regularly happy and ready to lend a cheerful hand (or four). Ziyal lacks in social graces, but he makes up for it with his boundless enthusiasm. There are a few basic humanoid customs he doesn't seem to understand, such as linear time, gender, linear sexuality, deception, maliciousness, and equality.

Ziyal seems to have an obsessive habit of collecting things. Graceless, aloof and fish-out-of-water, Ziyal has a unique sort of charm about him that generally ingratiate him to most he comes into contact with. However, some merely find him annoying or impossible to comprehend. He is bright and swift, with extremely advanced knowledge of biotechnology and medical practices.

While the W'qa'arr do not have an understanding of gender, they are still very much a sexual species that reproduces in a manner somewhat consistent with physical intimacy - though it is bizarre and unusual compared to most life forms in the Alpha Quadrant. As such, Ziyal is more correctly referred to as pansexual, indicating he has no gender preference and can find a being of any race or gender attractive physically or mentally. This oft shows up in Ziyal's tendency to get distracted by particularly beautiful people.
Strengths Cheerful, extroverted, energetic, bubbly, optimistic, works well in a team, exuberant, exceptionally intelligent. Ziyal is a lk'h'lliii, the rough translation of which is poet, a moniker he gained as a child for his more intuitive leanings. Ziyal is telepathic, though the extent of his abilities seems to only show up when he is paired with technology.

Ziyal is one of the more unprecedented biotechnologists in the fleet, due to his species' unique evolutionary incentive to develop centuries ahead of Starfleet standards. While there are some things Ziyal simply will not share, he provides the Galileo with a wide and stunning array of biotechnological advances only hinted at by Federation technology.
Weaknesses Difficult to comprehend, follows an alien moral code, irritating, naive, insistent, stubborn, willful, enigmatic, childish, easily distracted. It takes much time and patience to become accustomed enough to Ziyal to begin to understand him beyond what his translator can provide. The words he speaks tend to be bulky, snappish or irate, excited or hyperactive and often lacking the nuances he really means. As such he can often times come across as offensive, blunt, or harsh.

Ziyal holds very alien views about the universe and life, often times the words he says are disjointed and unrelated to one another at all. He can be somewhat prideful and arrogant. While Ziyal is very accepting of others, he also draws poor boundaries. He can come across as needy, clingy, self-absorbed, and fearful of rejection or abandonment. Another annoying habit is that Ziyal is a bit pretentious, wanting to "show off" and "prove himself". After many years on the W'qa'arr homeworld, he is eager to show others that he is in-fact intelligent and competent, unfortunately this can rub people the wrong way. He gets satisfaction out of knowing more than others, and is a tiny bit of an egotist in that child-like manner of his.
Ambitions Ziyal hopes to represent the W'qa'arr to the best of his abilities and to discover and explore the new exciting wonders of the Alpha Quadrant. More specifically he would someday like to serve with the Federation diplomatic corps, believing that to be a worthwhile pursuit. For now, he is content with his scientific posting as he feels it best demonstrates his usefulness.
Hobbies & Interests Exploring new things. Ziyal absolutely adores discovering and learning and thinking and analyzing and existing. He has a fascination for life in all its forms, and wants to do as much as he wants to be. He particularly enjoys the holodeck, and the Earth sport of swimming. Ziyal likes to practice with his ushaan-tor, an Andorian ceremonial blade given to him by his friend at Starfleet Enlisted Academy.
Vernacular Due to his translator Ziyal speaks in precise terms, but the words are usually delivered dramatically, emphatically and accompanied by intensive gesturing and physical movements. These physical movements appear to be part of the nuanced language Aw'arri, but the translator cannot adequately interpret them.

It is for this reason that people are often startlingly aware that they are missing key components of Ziyal's speech. Nevertheless, he comes across as excitable, intelligent, and hyperactive. He speaks in a quick pace, not slowing down for others to catch up. Because of this, the vocal translator sometimes lags behind, allowing people to hear the whistles and chirps and clicks that define his native language.
Orientation Neuter
Language(s) Spoken Aw'arri, Federation Signed Language.

Personal History The W'qa'arr are natural born doctors, having been born into an environment of harshness, hostility and chaos. The race adapted themselves over time by melding with natural technology and telepathic ability. Most of their technology is neurobiological, and the W'qa'arr are genetically engineered to survive the harsh climate of their homeworld. The natural species was weak and died off instantly, but with technological evolution they mature in a couple of years to full adulthood, they have armored protection and an exoskeleton, they have vast medical advances.

The W'qa'arr can reanimate their dead up to three days after they have died. Unfortunately, Ziyal was forbidden from bringing his species' reanimation technology to the quadrant, and there are strict laws that state only the W'qa'arr on their homeworld can administer the treatment to fellow W'qa'arr. He does however possess advanced medical knowledge and a wide array of trinkets and tools designed to help the scientific process go much smoother.

Ziyal was born into a long family of traditionally established healers. Within the first three years of his life, along with his 11 other siblings (also gender neutral), he was fully grown and integrated into the W'qa'arr educational system. Ziyal was born with a rare genetic disorder that affected his ability to learn language at the optimal rate of his people. By humanoid standards he was positively genius - but by W'qa'arr standards he was practically mentally retarded. He could not understand the nuances of his environment until he was six, something laughed at and mocked by his peers.

His parents believed in the traditional m'h's'iii ways which indicated the child must be starved to appreciate the harvest. He was starved of attention, affection and contact as a trial test of his endurance. This manifests in his personality as an overly needy, trusting and clingy nature. Ziyal has an inborn fear of abandonment as demonstrated by his emotionally unavailable family. He has an immense distaste for bullies and will not hesitate to step up when required, a stance that was unpopular at the Enlisted Academy where he attended due to its propensity to get him into trouble defending the weak.

The W'qa'arr are born through natural means, but then transferred out of the carrying host's eggs and placed inside of a containment cell designed to promote the W'qa'arr biological advancements. A child who does not go through this will mature much more slowly and usually dies within the first ten years of their life due to oxygenation exposure.

A W'qa'arr will stop increasingly maturing once they reach twenty years of age, by which their genetic sequences stop multiplying rapidly and continue progressing normally until elderly and eventually decaying fully. A W'qa'arr who is allowed to live out to the end of their life naturally can live up to three hundred years. Most die by two hundred and fifty, but a few have survived longer.

Ziyal is the first of his species to venture into the Alpha Quadrant from the Andromeda galaxy, and the second species to appear, behind the malcontent Kelvans of course. The W'qa'arr have advanced bioships that made it possible for Ziyal to arrive in the Alpha Quadrant as a representative for his species, who are similarly interested in peace and harmony. However, his people are reclusive and it was not standard or truly accepted for him to leave. He was told that once he leaves, he can never return. Ziyal was eager to see the Alpha Quadrant, believing it to be an undiscovered uncharted area full of life to explore, so despite this, he left his homeworld.

His parents disowned him from his family as well, viewing it as good riddance. He joined Starfleet when he was nine years of age (while chronologically young, genetically and cognitively he is a full adult by W'qa'arr standards), and graduated in biotechnology and bioengineering shortly after three years. Ziyal was overjoyed to discover that most of the Alpha Quadrant viewed him as intelligent and rational, rather than lagging behind his peers. Unfortunately for Starfleet, the W'qa'arr also practice a similar form of Prime Directive, and ultimately Ziyal was forbidden from sharing some of his species' technology with the Federation.

He spent a year at Starfleet Medical both debriefing, educating and learning some basic humanoid traits before he was assigned to the Galileo as a biotechnological expert. His name is usually shortened to Ziyal, but he is easily addressed as na-zee-yal. Ultimately, Ziyal is as much a mystery to the Federation as the Federation is to Ziyal. The alien simply wishes to understand the universe he occupies, and have himself be understood in return.
Starfleet History Ziyal's initial impression of SEAM (Starfleet Enlisted Academy at Mars) was one of anticipation and fascination. He attended the enlisted program for three years, an additional year longer than a normal enlisted cadet as he required a further societal and technological integration semester. Ziyal spent most of his time among classmates, though he gained a bit of a reputation as a player, always attempting to flirt with new and interesting people and talk to as many people as he could.

In Starfleet, Ziyal seemed to be appreciated as someone beyond intelligent. While on the W'qa'arr homeworld, he had been seen as deficient. It was a change to be among people who valued life despite its imperfections. The W'qa'arr tended to simply smash their problems or change them to suit their needs, while the Federation seemed to have a more adaptive viewpoint. Ziyal's integration into Starfleet went roughly for a while because of his enigmatic nature, which was somewhat offputting to the more humanoid species serving. SEAM was home to mostly humans, and a few Vulcans.

He did well at his classes, always studious and prepared. It was noted in his records that [["his additional appendages make for an excellent shuttle pilot."]] Ziyal minored in piloting and conn systems, while his main focus was technical and mechanical. The SEAM program for a biotechnologist was complex. One first had to understand the biological component, including wildlife psychology, before beginning the study of mechanical components. Fortunately, despite his alien nature, Ziyal succeeded well at these tasks because of the W'qa'arr inherent nature.

The only strikes against Ziyal's record at the academy are a few isolated incidents where Ziyal was aggressive toward other cadets due to their known status as bullies and aggressors themselves. Unfortunately Ziyal was far from heroic, positively incapacitating one cadet for merely giving another a dirty look. It took some effort, but at the end of his three years, he was seen as a viable candidate for graduation and as having an acceptable knowledge of humanoid custom. While those marks remain on his record, he has displayed only satisfactory behavior since, and has not made any more attempts at violence.

W'qa'arr Physiology [FDC Data]
-----------------------------------------------

Anatomy/structure:

Usually between one and six meters tall, with a wide diversity between height and weight for every W'qa'arr. Shorter W'qa'arr are known as kreihr while taller specimens are called dhoaa. Those exceptionally short or exceptionally tall are often looked at with fascination, while the average W'qa'arr falls between two and four meters in height.

Aside from genetic flaws (an occurrence that happens more frequently in the W'qa'arr species due to their extensive genetic manipulation of the embryo) most W'qa'arr possess a hardened exoskeleton consisting of bony ridges and layers. This system is not natural and is a result of genetic tampering, designed to allow their species the edge to survive. Within their structure also exists something of a hardened nearly metallic alloy known as kh'aqon~'rg.

This reinforces their structure and gives them considerable edge, but presents a bit of an issue at times when dealing with electromagnetic fields outside of their own planet. Fortunately, the W'qa'arr have developed a compound called tarhee that demagnetizes their internal structure for offworld travel.

Individual W'qa'arr vary in coloration and in the number of appendages. These appendages are known as muscular hydrostats - and form the basis for the W'qa'arr soft-digit system. Most of their facial tentacles, arms and legs are muscular hydrostats, leaving them the most vulnerable spots on the body.

The most common coloration is a shimmery blue-green, while golden-white tends to be more rare. Brown, purple, yellow, and orange pigmentations are known to exist in varying degrees of popularity. This pigmentation is not something that can be genetically manipulated, giving a degree of natural development to each W'qa'arr child. Most appendage configurations tend between eight to ten facial limbs, six claws/fingers, four arms, and three legs. Some elect to have their children modified for more or less depending on their personal preferences.

Respiratory system:

Like some Salamander species of Earth, the W'qa'arr breathe primarily through ducts in their skin. As a result of this, most W'qa'arr do not like wearing clothing, or wear modified versions of fabrics with tiny clustered holes to allow "breathing room".

Their respiratory system is advanced and systemic, lending them greater resistance to pulmonary illness and a greater chance of survival when injured. Unfortunately, the ducts in their skin also provide a disadvantage: bleeding. A W'qa'arr loses oxygen volume when wounded, and has a greater risk of hemorrhage due to a larger surface volume to lose blood. The exoskeleton helps to protect against their natural weakness.

Air travels along the skin and is absorbed through the respiration ducts located just under the dermis. It then oxygenates the blood which travels throughout the body and circulates. This system is highly vascularized and maintains a steady state of moisture due to specialized mucus cells in the skin which keep the flow of oxygen steady.

W'qa'arr that are oxygen deficient will resort to a process known as buccal pumping, by way of inflating and deflating specialized sacs in their throat designed to push air internally through their body via channels in the mouth.

Chemoreception & senses

All W'qa'arr possess advanced chemoreceptive abilities. Specific receptors are located on the tongue, and all across the skin. This influences their culture as well, making it much more tactile and physical than many. Language is accompanied by gestures and touch, movements possess meaning, casual touching that might be seen as flirtatious is accepted between all.

W'qa'arr can sense pheromones in the air, taste/smell poison, and detect endocrine fluctuations in others merely by touching them and being near them for long periods of time. They smell, touch and taste far more vividly than many other species. However, W'qa'arr tend to have poor hearing and limited visual acuity. They see outlines and shapes, and distinguish color, but most are nearsighted and lack clarity.

Visual system

Two eyes situated on top of their head connect to the visual chaisma located in the side of their brains. The visual chaisma is much more developed than the physical visual system, lending them a more nuanced interpretation of their visual world. Unfortunately images tend to be more fuzzy than other species. This system is linked inextricably with the neurotelepathic system. They have irises and pupils like many humanoid species, but their pupils are mydriatic and their irises tend to be uniformly colored.

Psychokinetic abilities

A somewhat more mysterious process, but nonetheless important, W'qa'arr have advanced telepathic abilities that they use mostly to intuit their environment and the technologies within. These telepathic abilities work much differently than normalized telepathy. W'qa'arr cannot sense thoughts, they merely have a sort of cosmic natural awareness.

They can sense the will and motivation of things, the structure, the life, and can intuit changes technologically. These abilities paved the way for their biotechnological civilization. Most W'qa'arr understand machinery to an absurd degree. These abilities help in the advent of language and hearing, allowing a crutch for the W'qa'arr to rely on in the event of one or more of their senses failing.

Circulatory system

Hemocyanin based blood, giving it a greenish tint that looks familiar to Vulcans, Romulans, Rigelians and other vulcanoid species in the Alpha Quadrant. (Though these species have copper-based blood, it is not similar to hemocyanin.) This blood source is evolved under a higher gravity environment, and lends the W'qa'arr an increased resistance to pressure changes, "the bends", and deep-sea excursions.

Hemocyanin based blood carries copper atoms organized by cofactors and controlled by histidine residues. This adaptation is necessary for living in a much colder environment, and most hemocyanin-based life forms evolved in cold, pressurized environments like K'q'kwez'xi I-123'new'Qey, the W'qa'arr homeworld. Oxygen in these environments is less common, which means the usual hemoglobin component of many species is less efficient than hemocyanin.

W'qa'arr have three hearts. Two brachial hearts sit on either side of the chest, in the way that lungs do. While the main heart sits below them. The brachial hearts assist the systemic heart by focusing solely on the oxygenation process, while the main heart feeds this oxygen through the rest of the body.

Digestive system

Muscular stomach located just beside the main heart in the thoracic cavity. Food stays there until it is softened enough by the acid production of the stomach. From there, food moves to the caecum (located near the excretion system) for further digestion. After this, the food then travels to the liver (located near the upper thigh of the tripodal leg) for absorption of its nutritional component and then is excreted at the base of the lower foot of the tripodal leg.

Reproductive system

W'qa'arr reproduce both sexually and asexually in what is a very complicated reproductive process. Between all W'qa'arr the gametes are identical due to the lack of gender between each. Each have what is known as a nidamental gland which possesses eggs ready for fertilization and a testis, which produce sperm. The nidamental gland is accessed beyond a flap located near the pelvis, which is also the birthplace of fertilized eggs which are then laid to hatch.

In sexually mature W'qa'arr upon the arrival of mating season they grow a hectocotylus, which is a new appendage (that looks much like an ordinary W'qa'arr arm) that stores spermatophores and releases them through specialized skin ducts into a receiving partner. This hectocotylus functions much in the way of a humanoid penis. This hectocotylus can interact with the nidamental gland of another W'qa'arr resulting in sexual reproduction or they can fertilize their own eggs and produce as the sole parent.

Nervous system

W'qa'arr brains are relatively similar to humanoid brains. They possess a giant axon located in the cranium that extends throughout the entire body and controls movement, propulsion, thought, sensation, and everything else a brain is responsible for. Nerves are present all throughout the body, though the W'qa'arr lack a natural spinal column (and a natural skeletal system), most are genetically engineered with one along with the exoskeletal-bone system. This system is highly advanced due to their telepathic abilities.

Medical Record
-----------------------------------------------

Childhood

1-3: Diagnosed with thr'iee'mjs, genetic developmental disorder. Undergoes surgical, genetic, psychiatric and medical care under experienced scientists as well as his parents' unique brand of treatment.

4-5: Eventually mainstreamed in school until graduation. Ziyal was considered far behind his peers. He eventually received a revolutionary treatment which allowed him to communicate his inner thoughts outwardly by the use of h'maik crystals embedded in his arm.

Adulthood

6-7: Counseling sessions reveal Ziyal has no place in W'qa'arr society.

8-9: He was provided with a logical alternative. He could take one of their bioships to the Alpha Quadrant, where their Kelvan neighbors had explored centuries ago. The Alpha Quadrant was considered primitive by W'qa'arr standards, and due to W'qa'arr law, Ziyal could never return once he made the journey. Ziyal accepted and was disowned from his society and given the tools necessary for his journey.

9-10: Modified h'maik implant to attune to Federation Standard and the Federation universal translator devices, psychiatric assessment recommends basic federation standard signed language be taught as additional help. Per his request he is admitted to Starfleet Enlisted Academy after passing the preparatory examinations.
