First Log on Galileo-A

Posted on 29 Aug 2018 @ 8:36pm by Commander Marisa Wyatt

424 words; about a 2 minute read

"Computer, open personal log."

Marisa sat for several long moments, unsure where to begin and frankly not sure if she even wanted to begin.

"This starts my new assignment as the Chief Science Officer aboard the Galileo-A. I admit that I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I'm very happy to be back in science. It's not that I really ever left, but for several years I was primarily a counselor. Now that door is closed, I can focus all my time on science. It feels good.

On the other hand, I am not starting off on a good footing with Captain Saalm. It's not just that I disagree with her about the way she chose to recruit for this assignment, although I still believe that we should not have to practically beg for an assignment. Our record should stand for itself. And if not, we have letters of recommendation and commendations. We don't need to act like a bunch of piranha in a feeding frenzy. It's more that we have very different world views, and we seem to be at odds more often than not. But I don't have to interact with her much, outside working on the bridge, so it shouldn't be a problem.

It was easier before, when Commander Ban was around. But he received a last-minute transfer." She had put away her personal feelings and was looking forward to working with him. "He's the reason I even have this position. And the reason we have an aquaponics section of the arboretum. And now, he won't be around to see how the fish tanks work in practice. But then, that is the nature of working for Starfleet, or any type of military organization. Transfers are a part of life." Still, she felt like she'd lost an advocate. She didn't know Commander Blake, and she hand real friends on the ship.

She again grew quiet. "I'm now the medical guardian of Miraj Derani. She has no family that can do the job. I like her, but some of her decisions have been...reckless. I hope I can help her get cleared so she doesn't need me running interference. She has amazing potential, and I'd trust her to fly any ship. It's her personal life that needs help. I hope she can find that with the counseling department on the Galileo-A. They are quite good."

Another long pause. "You know, three years is a long time. A lot can happen. I hope this will be good for all of us."

"End log."
