Personality & Traits

General Overview First and foremost, Fynn is a starship enthusiast. Even tasks that might be considered mundane or tedious are seen as fantastic opportunities to him. Soft spoken and agreeable, his impoverished childhood has made him frugal with resources, and his personal philosophy could well be summarized as ‘Be Prepared’. Fynn is also deeply devoted to his faith in the Prophets.
Strengths Fynn has an encyclopedic knowledge of Starfleet engineering, and of other engineering principles in general. Often underestimated, he is far from naïve. Living through both the Occupation and the Dominion War, he knows more than some how dangerous the galaxy can be. These experiences have made him a skilled survivalist. His genial nature has made him a friendly and cooperative crewmate.
Weaknesses He isn’t always as assertive as he could be, which has led to slower advancement in his career than would be expected for one with his skill. He can be disproportionately critical of waste – one of the few times you might see him lose his temper. Starvation as a child has also instilled certain behaviors as an adult that he continues to compulsively follow: he will hide small stashes of water and nutrition packs throughout any vessel or station to which he is assigned, and if replicators are offline (or simply unavailable) he will always set aside a portion of his current meal to ensure there will be a next one.
Ambitions Excel as an engineer and then join a religious order.
Hobbies & Interests Learning everything he can about Bajoran history and culture; playing Springball; enjoying other games that sharpen his mind and manual dexterity, like Strategema and Dom-jot; exploring different startships on the holodeck.
Orientation Bisexual
Language(s) Spoken Bajoran, Federation Standard

Personal History Fynn Taymor was born in a refugee camp on Valo II during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. While safe from the Cardassians, conditions in the camp were difficult and survival was not guaranteed. His parents worked repairing items in their camp, and he observed and learned to help. The family was also sustained by their faith in the Prophets during this difficult time. Engineering and prayer would become lifelong interests.

The Occupation ended in 2369, and two years later the Fynn family moved to Bajor. Taymor was treated for malnutrition and began his adolescence on his homeworld as it recovered from the wounds of the past. Taymor learned of Starfleet and became enamored with some simple starship schematics he discovered during his education. His father Antos was not a fan of the Federation; he resented their non-interference while Bajorans were being oppressed. Those views did soften over time, primarily due to a Starfleet Officer being revealed as the Emissary of the Prophets. Given this, along with the friendship and support shown to Bajor, there were no objections when Taymor applied to Starfleet Academy.
Starfleet History When he arrived at the Academy, Fynn felt like a kid at the Jumja Stick Emporium. There was so much to see, to learn, to experience… he threw himself into his studies and excelled academically during his four-year education. He did make time to join and Academy Springball team, and he was assigned to the USS Republic for his cadet training cruise. Although he was arguably more knowledgeable than the cadet chosen to serve as Chief Engineer, Fynn’s professors felt he would have difficulty delegating tasks and attempt to do more than his share of the work. This was a fair observation, but as he had no ambition for leadership, Fynn was happy just to be there.

Upon graduation, he was assigned as an engineering officer to the Nebula Class USS Merrimac. Over the course of two years, he was able to put theory to practice and gain the hands-on experience for which he had been longing. He particularly excelled in his work on the environmental systems, increasing the efficacy of energy expenditures. His department head noted Fynn’s potential and recommended a transfer to a smaller class vessel where shy young Bajoran could gain more experience and perhaps opportunities to advance.

This led to an assignment aboard the Nova Class USS Edison. Already a fan of most classes to begin with, Fynn truly fell in love with the Nova and quickly new the systems and deck plan inside out. His former DH’s instincts had been on point, as within two years he was promoted to Assistant Chief Engineer with the rank of Lieutenant, Junior Grade. During the following years, he slowly developed the leadership skills that would be required when he finally moved to a department head position of his own. This trajectory seemed on course, as his current Chief was planning to retire in 2391. Fynn was a perfect fit for the job, and the time spent as assistant would make for a seamless transition.

Unfortunately, in late 2390 Fynn was injured during a skirmish with Nausicaan raiders. He was near a power transfer conduit ruptured and received severe plasma burns to his left arm. While recovering, he wondered if this had been a sign from the Prophets that he had been following the wrong path. Even though he loved his career, he had also considered pursuing the religious life. Perhaps this harrowing injury had been an opportunity to reflect on the ‘pagh’ not taken?

Instead of pursuing promotion aboard the Edison, Fynn requested an extended leave of absence so he could contemplate his future. He retreated to the Dakeen Monastery on Bajor to heal and reflect. At the end of a year, he had come to the realization that both paths before him were in fact one: he would walk the first half as an engineer and the second as a Prylar, then perhaps Ranjen in service of the Prophets. Returning to service, he was assigned as an engineering officer to Regula-1. While reacclimating to Starfleet life, his experience with the Nova class and his career path prior to his accident have caught the eye of higher ups aware that the USS Galileo-A needs a Chief Engineer.
