Physical Description Dex is slightly above average in terms of height for a Betazoid and solidly built after years of training from being just a boy by his mother, a corporal in Starfleet Marine Corps, through to his position among the ranks of security personnel in Starfleet. He has thus gained and maintained a very muscled physique.

In fact, the gym is like a second home to him as he often used his presence to assert his authority over junior officers - a trait his seniors have been trying to change for some time.
Body Art Dex has a tattoo on the left cheek of his buttocks. It is an elaborately written term for ‘friend’ in the Betazed international language, but it was misspelt and would thus be meaningless to anyone who wasn’t part of his class when they all got the same during one night of intoxicated shenanigans. Of course, tattoos were easily removed, but this has such significance to him as a symbol of his time as a teenager (and the fact that he rarely got into such states) that he left it as it is.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Dex is most confident when he is uniform and is doing his job, and indeed, were anyone to observe him only while he was on duty, they would characterise him as a confident, self-assured person. He has a wry sense of humour, and despite his mother’s best efforts to change the behaviour, he cannot always hold back a sardonic comment even in times of crisis or in the presence of a senior officer.
However, Dex has always found it difficult to make any real, close friends, preferring to spend time on the holodeck with his holo-pet; Astra, or at the gym. His sardonic comments often a sign that is not completely at ease … or simply because he finds he has something amusing to share.
Dex was conceived using artificial means just as his older brother was, but due to an issue during foetal development, his paracortex did not fully develop. This led to the unusual case of leaving Dex with telepathic but not empathic abilities. He does not ‘sense’ emotions without actively trying to use his telepathic abilities to ‘read’ the subject, and since this is taboo even in Betazoid society, Dex has long treated his ability more as a ‘convenient communication method’ with other telepaths, and otherwise useless having spent most of his life from his late teens among non-telepaths..
It should be noted that, when this ‘defect’ became evident as he entered adolescence, it was the cause of some bullying and a feeling of being ‘incomplete’ among his own kind. Even now, as an adult, he can feel uncomfortable around other Betazoids. It may also explain the lack of close friendships he has.
Strengths Dex is excellent at following orders and his service record has numerous entries on being excellent at this. He is fiercely loyal, be that to his squad, department head, or ship.
He leads by example, being the epitome of the ‘textbook-Starfleet Officer’, and never expects a junior officer to do any job he himself will not. That said, though he will freely send juniors who transgress on laps around the ship, he is often more lenient than most if he feels no great blunder has been made.
He is able to keep calm under pressure and even in extreme situations is able to keep a level head - falling back on the rulebook (something people had often joked Dex could recite word for word).
Dex is respectful of authority, courtesy more of his mother’s rather militant-style of parenting as much as his Starfleet training, but there is often a comment or two leaning towards (or sometimes outright) irony. He trusts in the chain of command and it is very rare for him to question an order, though he will do so if he has enough conviction in his stance.
Weaknesses Paradoxically, what makes him an excellent officer has been detrimental on a personal and social level. His ‘always-on-duty’ persona and being generally not given to socialising often makes him seem sometimes appear approachable; something previous department heads have asked him to work on - though it has ever been a ‘work in progress’. He has very few friends, and makes no real effort to make more, but those he does count as such are extremely important to him. This introversion when he isn’t on duty may go back to the tough time he had with the ‘disability’ of lacking empathic abilities and his strict upbringing.

Ambitions When, as a cadet, he was asked to answer the question: ‘What do you wish to achieve in your career in Starfleet’ he wrote: ‘To be the best Starfleet Officer I can be’, he truly meant it. Even after all these years, were he to be asked the same question, it would be the same.
On a personal note, however, he has always had the desire to be a father - though he has admitted this to only one person mainly because of the fear he has that he would end up being the same kind of parent his mother was.
Hobbies & Interests When not on duty and during his allotted time, Dex can usually be found on the holodeck with his dog Astra hiking across the wilderness of any number of worlds in the database. This is when he finds himself most content, and though a part of him wishes he could share it, it is also so precious to him that he has never invited anyone to join him. Preferring the company of Astra and his own, quiet thoughts.

Perhaps because of the amount of time he spends at the gym and training in combat skills, people might assume these to be hobbies of Dex’s, but in truth these are simply to remain the best he can be at his job.

His other passion, some would perhaps fall from their chair to learn, is astrophysics. Though he could not hold a candle to any scientist in Starfleet … or anywhere else … it does not stop him devouring as much ‘armchair-astrophysics’ (read: astrophysics put into terms that anyone can understand) as he can.
Vernacular Dex has a deep voice which he uses to full advantage when commanding a squad, but is usually quite softly spoken in conversation.

Personal History Dex is the second son of a retired member of Starfleet Marine Corps whose parenting style was indeed much more in keeping with the training of new recruits than of parenting two boys. Indeed, Yunni’s methods had, Dex was to learn much later, even being of concern to the boys’ educators and other members of the community.

His older brother, Katra was senior by 11 years, and by the time Dex was old enough to start pre-school, Katra had left the family home to attend college far from home. Though there was no ill-feeling between the two, Dex and Katra were never close due mainly to Katra’s absence during almost all of the younger’s early life and well into his teens.

It was no secret that Katra resented, and even perhaps hated, his mother’s strict manner of raising her children. No unfinished chore went without substantial punishment, and rewards were more the lack of reprisal rather than praise. And so, as Dex navigated his way through young boy to teenager, he had no ally in the home and though he never could say he felt the same way as his brother; the hard resentment and bitterness that Katra rarely concealed when her name was raised, Dex found it more comfortable to say that he ‘respected’ his mother, rather than ‘loved’ her in the way he heard others speak of their feelings towards their parents.
While Katra was gifted academically, Dex was more inclined to physical disciplines. He was by no means lacking when it came to subjects such as science or mathematics, he found himself much more drawn to history; especially the history of conflict.

It was because of these two things; his excelling in martial arts and his eagerness to learn of the wars that had been fought both in ancient times and more recently, that Yunni managed to find common ground with at least one of her sons, though she was sometimes even harder on Dex because of this; her youngest she understood, somewhat.

As Dex grew into adolescence and his telepathic abilities began to develop, it became clear very quickly that he lacked the other part of a Betazoid’s mental abilities; active empathy. Dex was unable to feel the emotions of those around him and, after being investigated medically almost as soon as this was discovered - empathic understanding between Betazoids made up as much of their communication as either speech or telepathy - it was discovered that there had been a deviation of the development of his paracortex which had led to this anomaly. It was extraordinarily rare, and was not something that could be detected until the problem arose.

This led to a brief time of physical clashes with his schoolmates who would mock him for his obliviousness at some shared joke he had no way of being a part of.
Yunni’s discipline and military-like way of raising him managed to curb this behaviour quickly as she dealt out severe punishments if he used violence in response to this, most especially as he was by now training in various fighting arts and training his body daily. Yunni was relentless in driving home the message that he must never use physical force on a weaker opponent who did not offer a fair challenge on the same terms. Just as as he would humiliate a classmate with a beating, so too would she make him suffer the same as she dragged him before the victim of his anger and their parents too, forcing him to work chores for any aggrieved party while always driving home the same point; ‘he won nothing when he could beat his classmates to the ground without them ever having the chance to match him’.

It was at those times he felt most like he could hate his mother, but the fights soon stopped, but there was to be something instilled in Dex that never quite went away when among his own people; that they could be mocking him and he would never know.

When Dex decided to join Starfleet, it had come as no surprise to anyone, only that he had decided not to join Starfleet Marines but heading instead for Security and Tactical.

It is said the shouting of anger and dismay from Yunni - both verbal and telepathic - could be heard for miles.
Starfleet History Dex joined the Academy a quiet, introverted young man, always eager to please and seeming to know every rule and regulation before it was ever taught to his class by the instructors. But as time went by, Dex found he could relax somewhat, spending very little time with other Betazoids and so given to the suspicion and anger he had learned from such a young age. In fact, it was during this time that a rather sardonic side to the young Betazoid came to surface, with many a surprised face turned his way as he offered some wry comment on this situation or that conversation. Dex Narya had quite the wit, it seemed.

Dex also had one significant relationship during his time at the Academy, and was such that he was surprised that he could ever feel as close to another person as he did to them. In fact, they gave him a gift - which most people found odd, ,when they learned just what it was; a program of a Earth breed of dog; an energetic and loving female named Astra, and though the entire galaxy could line up and take turns to remind him she was just a hologram; Dex loved her all the same.

His first posting was as a junior officer in the Security Department of the USS Gordost, a medical vessel that operated well within Federation borders and a post that, although he truly gave his best to, he found frustrating as his team was left with endless drills without ever facing any real threat that could not easily be handled by the Chief of Security from her console on the bridge.

It was with enormous pride and excitement to learn he had been put forward and accepted for the post of Assistant Chief of Security aboard the USS Galileo.
Medical History Dex was born with an undeveloped paracortex which had the unusual result of his developing telepathic abilities during adolescence, as normal, but lacking empathic senses. Though surgical interventions were possible, there was also a significant chance of the surgery failing and causing a loss of his telepathy as a result. Because of this, it was decided not to proceed with the surgery.

Aside from a broken arm and leg during a climbing accident when he was a teen, there have been no significant injuries noted on file before Dex joined the Academy.

During his training, Dex suffered significant fractures to his large areas of his ribcage during an accident during a training exercise. Medical treatment was successful and no further complications are expected as a result.
