Personality & Traits

General Overview Hovar plays into the strong and silent kind of individual, and he has a genuine interest in society, specifically humans. He also has a huge interest in sin both as a theological vice and a sociological detriment. He believes in a "ministry of presence," which dictates where he goes and what he does (within reason, of course).
Strengths Hovar has a deep sense of curiosity, and he enjoys being a perpetual student. When he is not "making his rounds," he studies different cultures and works to figure out what is best for not only the crew, but also to support the mission and the ship in his own unique way. Bottom line though, he is a fully trained warrior proficient in Mok'bara and in using a bat'leth, and is not afraid to show his skills to the enemy.

His Klingon upbringing also bestowed another gift. During his time at the Academy, it was found that while he performed admirably in his Counseling track, Hovar also excelled in Security operations. Small arms and hand to hand combat were intuitive to him because of his Klingon upbringing. Thanks to his medical training, he adopted the role of a combat corpsman. He was able to make the decision on whether to get them to safety or, as he would learn later on, perform last rites.
Weaknesses Naturally, being a Klingon, it is hard for people to see Hovar as a Chaplain when he looks like he can only take lives instead of saving souls. Also, Hovar's greatest strength as a Klingon is also his greatest weakness. Hovar is not afraid to put himself in the line of fire, and in severe danger, to rescue fallen shipmates. Hovar, despite trying to overcome the traditional Klingon stubbornness, one of those was trying to overcome his weaknesses. Some weaknesses, however, were embarrassing.

As a famous physician of Star Fleet fame once said, "I'm a doctor, not an engineer." Hovar's Academic Review Board honored the famous Doctor by saying, "Hovar is a Counselor, not a scientist, a mechanic, an engineer, nor a linguist. He is not to be trusted with anything larger or more complex than a shuttle craft." While he always strives to improve his weaknesses, he finds that such matters to be out of his sphere of understanding. Hovar understands people rather than the ships that carry them. It has been rumored that Hovar once said concerning a tutoring session, "Speak to me as if you were to a small child, or a golden retriever."
Ambitions Hovar, being a minister, only has a few ambitions. His first ambition is that he can be a good minister for the crew that he is assigned to. Second, and perhaps the most important, is that no one, without exception, will ever feel like that they are talking up to, or being spoken down from, the Chaplain.
Hobbies & Interests While he is not allowed to carry a phaser due to the nature of the Chaplain Corps, he does spend his time in the Holodeck, when he can, for marksmanship training, especially when he is with the security officers. He also enjoys, as a guilty hobby, knitting.
Vernacular Hovar, while "rough around the edges" and has a booming bass voice, talks rather gently and chooses his words carefully. Some might compare it to talking to their own grandparents, yet can be just as stern when he has to.
Orientation Heterosexual
Language(s) Spoken Galactic Basic, Klingonese

Personal History Rev. Fr. Hovar Kov of the Star Fleet Chaplain Corps is a rather paradoxical individual, as there are few Klingons who fill the ranks of the Chaplain Corps. He was born on his home planet Qronos with his parents, who were part of the staff of the Klingon Ambassador office on Earth. Thus, he spent a lot of time on Earth, and was curious of humans. However, he was still raised the Klingon way, and he went through all of the training that a child would go through. After all, the average teenage Klingon was much more dangerous than the average teenage Human. Hovar, until he reached his maturity, had only a small inclination to want to join Star Fleet, least of all the Chaplain Corps.

However, everything changed one day when he was training. Hovar was on the grounds of Star Fleet Academy, while his parents were in a meeting, that someone approached him. This person was the Reverend Ralph Gomez, a Lieutenant in the Chaplain Corps. Ralph was curious about the bat'leth, and Hovar was more than eager to teach the human about Klingon martial arts. After Ralph had managed his own, he claimed that he had a much more powerful weapon, which intrigued the young Klingon. Ralph was sadly busy, but he guided Hovar to another member of the Chaplain Corps, one Rev. Fr. Marcus Webb. After a long vocational discretion, 4 years of the Star Fleet Academy, and another 3 years at the Star Fleet Chaplain Corps school, Hovar became Father Hovar.

While his parents initially did not like the idea (AT ALL!!), they agreed in the sense that someone else was able to continue the family name. However, when his eldest brother, Oleq, found out about it, he responded with what would be Hovar's motto concerning his position. "We are brothers before any other rank or title."
Starfleet History As with any other officer in Star Fleet, Hovar was sent to Star Fleet Academy, where he was put through the paces of being a Star Fleet Officer. For Hovar, the PT was nothing to write home about. What changed, however, was the pure academic course-load that he was placed under. It wasn't any different from his classmates, nor was it too much for him mentally to handle. As with all things in Star Fleet, he was not alone. His fellow cadets were going through the same mess, and they had to survive everything together. What was unique about Hovar's experience at the Academy was that he refused to keep himself idle.

During the summer cruises, he was apprenticed to a Chaplain, serving aboard a variety of different settings from space stations to planetary stations. It was during his Junior year that he found out that he had to chase after the Chaplain, who was rarely in his office. Instead, he was helping the Engineers with some heavy lifting, or talking a rather rebellious Ensign in the Brig, or participating in an Intruder Drill and he was "it." When Hovar asked why the Chaplain didn't just wait for the crew to come to him, Hovar got a taste of his own medicine. "I've never heard of a Klingon sit and wait for the enemy to come before. Are you going to be the first?"

After graduation, he made his way to the Chaplain Corps school, where he went through Chaplain Basic Officer Leadership Course, and that was where the "real fun started." Courses in theology, liturgics, dogmas, philosophy, mythologies, theodicy, and a course load of other subjects flooded his mind. For three years, Hovar went through the courses until his new bishop ordained him, and then he finally received his first assignment, solo.
Medical History Hovar has all the typical bruises of a Klingon adult thanks to the rigorous upbringing.
