Commodore's Log, Stardate 67259.8

Our attempts at placating the alien entities in the Lyshan mine have proven successful...at least for now. As previously hypothesized by several members of our crew, the beings we encountered have a strange fascination and desire for tribbles, which led us to conclude that the only possible way to eliminate Galileo's infestation while achieving our mission goals would be to offer our tribbles to the entities.

It took close to four hours of continuous transporter cycling, but we were able to beam all of the tribbles aboard Galileo down to the subterranean cave network that is the aliens' home. Initial observations suggested the entities were very pleased with our offering, and the tribbles have found a new home and a new 'crew' that will hopefully be able to take care of them.

I admit, I might have been violating some sort of medical ethics protocol by authorizing the use of tribbles as libations, but the dilemma our crew faced with such a rampant infestation did not leave us any other alternative. The repercussions of our actions will be unknown for some time, but it is my hope that no harm will come from our decisions.

I have informed Gul Verrok of my crew's actions. He was not pleased, of course, but he is not an unreasonable man and -- in light of the losses his crew suffered down in the mine at the hands of the entities -- seems somewhat relieved that the beings have momentarily been tempered. What the future holds for the Lyshan mining colony is uncertain, however. The uridium in the planet's crust is a vital resource to the entities' survival, and I doubt the resumption of mining efforts would be well-received by them. I have submitted a formal report to Starfleet Command and the Cardassian government notifying them of our discoveries, and it will be up to their collective decision how best to move forward. Despite Lyshan's convenient location, there are other sources of uridium not too far away, and putting the lives of an entire alien civilization at risk simply for a natural resource is in direct violation of what the Federation stands for.

Many lives have already been lost down in the mine, and it is my hope that learning such a costly lesson will lead both governments to not repeat their mistakes in the future.

Computer, end log.
