Mission Summary
The Mirror Universe has been well documented by the limited number of Starfleet vessels to have passed to the other side, first with the now-(in)famous USS Enterprise under the command of James T Kirk, and later by the crew of space station Deep Space Nine, auspiciously under the command of Benjamin Lafayette Sisko.
While it is apparent that the two universes share some commonality in terms of their level of technological development and the broad range of cultures and species present, there is a substantial difference in terms of idealism. The data available to Starfleet at this time seems to indicate that there are two major factions in the galactic politics of this environment. The Terran Empire (TE), for the sake of this briefing analogous to the Federation, albeit with far more limited rights for non-human species, and with a greater emphasis on military matters above scientific exploration; and the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance (KCA) who has seemingly annexed multiple territories both through conquest and through a shared distrust and indeed hatred of the Terran Empire.
Once a powerful galactic empire, the newly rebuilt Terran Empire is relatively new to the galactic stage, having been formed from the successful rebellion of Humans who were previously a slave species to the KCA and used primarily for manual labour. Their recent uprising, contributed to in part by the assistance of Federation assets and technology forcibly obtained by TE operatives, seems to have successfully freed humanity from it’s former masters.
Ostensibly, the TE has gone on the offensive, attacking multiple systems and destroying countless vessels, now holding a wide-reaching number of planetary systems and holding a sizeable battle fleet.
The KCA, having for many years been the dominant military force in the galaxy, do not appear to have been prepared for such a successful rebellion, and even less so for that rebellion to cement itself as a political and militaristic opponent on the wider stage. System after system has fallen, and the political leadership has changed hands on multiple occasions. Whilst neither sides have a hierarchy that is available for study by Starfleet, it is safe to assume that ultimate control must rest in the hands of someone.
