Physical Description Logan_Lerman_-_GIF_hunt_(2).gifBeaumont looks much like any other officer. His slightly pointed ears are the only indication to his mixed heritage. Despite the obvious feature, he still tends to blend into the background when others are around. His hair is the colour of ground coffee which can make his skin seem paler than it already is. His young, fresh faced appearance is in contrast with both a strong jaw line and very expressive grey-blue eyes. He has no visible brow ridge, but you can feel it through the skin with your fingers. His rounded eyebrows add a look of perpetual interest or slight surprise and are decidedly more Human. It is the most pointed out feature by Vulcans regardless of his slightly pointed ears.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Growing up, Beaumont was regarded as a very curious and sensitive child. Being half Vulcan Beaumont experienced emotions more intensely than other human children. As a coping mechanism, he would withdraw from social contact with others and would rely on his natural Vulcan instinct to suppress his emotions which he wasn't able to manage very well. The harder he tried, the more erratic he would behave. He didn't find comfort in extended family on Vulcan either. No matter how much contact he was given with Vulcan culture, even learning the Vulcan language, he never truly felt comfortable hiding his ineptitude at self control. This sent him into fits of anger and a long bout of depression during his time on Vulcan. He had begun to find his education frustrating, which was making him lash out. He was mercilessly bullied and even after returning to Earth in his early teens, he dreaded the yearly visits.

Once on Earth, he began to experience problems integrating with other non-Vulcan children. He struggled with reading the emotions and intentions of others. Having spent years trying to (unsuccessfully) apply control to his emotions he had to now contend with navigating the extremely complex nature of communication with other emotional beings that didn’t seem bothered in the slightest if they allowed their decisions to be governed by them. In Beaumont’s mind, things needed to be ordered and seem logical or he would become agitated or anxious, naturally finding comfort in repetitive routines to ease his mind. The problem for him, was that emotions were rarely, if ever, logical or ordered.

When he was a teenager his mother was killed in a ground vehicle accident a few blocks from their home. He was temporarily crippled by pain and grief and more than once his father tried to convince him that an education on Vulcan was the only thing that would allow him to cope with his emotional instability. He refused, and insisted on staying on Earth. He agreed however to see Starfleet counselors to at least explore other coping skills. Starfleet medical doctors, psychologists, neuroscientists and an unnumbered amount of grad students all took turns interviewing and offering therapies. It wasn’t very common for a Vulcan hybrid to seek alternative methods for dealing with an extremely active limbic system. He wasn’t comfortable with the idea of long term medicines, and had specifically asked for behavioural or cognitive therapies, psionic therapy, and alternative non-Vulcan meditation techniques.

Since then, he has had greater control over the intensities of his emotions and he has transformed into a very empathetic, self-aware and gregarious young man. He is very curious and asks a lot of questions, especially if communication isn’t clear and concise. He is naturally honest, and if someone is incorrect he can come across as blunt or matter-of-fact; especially if it’s something the other person doesn’t want to hear. Despite this, most people find him very warm, kind and compassionate. He has the sensitivity and genuine empathy that makes others trust him. While he may not always know what the other person requires to feel better, he has a need to fix whatever it is that is upsetting the person.

Even though he’s an introvert by nature, he can’t stand to be alone for long periods of time. He has a quiet gregariousness that makes him seek out groups of friends where he can sit and enjoy people's company. Granted, he would prefer if someone else did the talking and the socializing for which he is sometimes clueless, but he enjoys the company regardless. He loves listening to gossip or stories, and he's always particularly fond of people that can tell them well, as he isn’t very good at it himself. He’s envious of those that can rattle off a humourous anecdote and finds those that are good at embellishing especially enjoyable company. He is very empathetic and finds he can become overstimulated if someone else is feeling strongly about something, especially negative feelings.

In his professional life, he always strives to impress his superiors. The quality of his work is always crisp and it's quite clear that he pays particular attention to tiny details of a project. He has been known to go above and beyond his job description to get something done and done properly. He gets frustrated at himself if he makes a mistake and usually works harder until he's mastered that skill. He values cooperation and thrives in a team where he can quietly make contributions to an end goal.
Strengths +Computer Skills, +Strength, +Good listener, +Meticulous, +Loyal, +Dependable, +Mechanical Repair
His biggest strength is his dependability and reliability. His colleagues know if they need something done and done well, ask Beaumont to do it. His mechanical aptitude is very high. By training he knows systems and programs, but his strength lies in repairing physical hardware when the system breaks. He rarely says no when asked to take on extra tasks and his performance on one project never suffers as a result of the added workload. He never complains, and just quickly and efficiently gets the job done. He has exceptional strength compared to other humans, but isn’t very physically imposing compared to other Vulcans or mixed species Vulcans for that matter. He is very empathetic and hates when he’s upset someone. He is an exceptional listener, and others find it very natural to tell him about their problems. He may not have the skills to offer advice to them, but they usually feel better just from his non judging quiet listening.
Weaknesses -emotionally turbulent, -telepathy, -blunt, -small talk
Beaumont’s fast limbic system is to blame for his hyperactive emotions. Some forms of non-Vulcan meditation has helped him cope. Instead of concentrating his efforts on suppressing his feelings he now subjectively views them as they rise up, analyses them, and then simply let them fade back. On days when he’s feeling tired or has lost concentration, it is never hard to tell what he’s thinking as he tends to be quite obvious on how he feels. He has very limited touch telepathy. He has never been given formal training in mind meld techniques and can not perform some of the traditional techniques that those growing up on Vulcan would receive. Prior to his Mother’s death, she showed him how to communicate through touch, reading surface thoughts or sharing a vision, but establishing a connection was always messy and took a lot of patience from his Mother. He has received training in the Vulcan mind meld techniques and while he's still learning, he is much better at it than last year.
Ambitions To be a valued crewmember, and to do his job to the best of his ability.
Hobbies & Interests Has a strong affinity to Biology, especially neurobiology and can spend hours reading about it. For someone who hasn’t formally studied it, he is quite knowledgeable and secretly wishes he could one day study to work in the field but enjoys engineering too much to make the leap. Enjoys doing outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, trail running, and canoeing. Very competent with computers, and enjoys tinkering with system settings. Has a new found hobby in studying Exocomp systems and behaviour.
Vernacular Speaks deliberately. Favours direct, clear language. Avoids using idioms.
Orientation Bisexual
Language(s) Spoken Federation Standard, Vulcan

Personal History His father, Cole, was an enlisted engineer in Starfleet posted to the USS Titan. He met T’ress, a civilian teacher aboard the Titan. They fell in love, married and with the help of the Titan’s medical facilities, conceived a child. Both having been born on Earth, T’ress and Cole decided that was the best place for them to raise their child while Cole continued his career with Starfleet. T’ress received a teaching job within walking distance of the house K’os would be raised in. There were a number of attempts to take K’os to Vulcan. Once such trip lasted a couple of years while he attended a school there but it was obvious that he didn’t cope well with the culture shock. He was bullied by his cousins, and mercilessly teased by children his own age. They returned permanently to Earth when he was twelve.

Shortly after returning to Earth, his mother was struck by a ground vehicle while walking to the school where she taught. It was a tragic loss that affected the community and his family greatly. Beaumont wasn’t able to cope with the feelings of grief and pain very well and as a result he withdrew socially. Frequently lashing out in anger (though never violence). He bulked at his father’s insistence on going to Vulcan, but eventually agreed to see Starfleet counselor’s where he very quickly gained the skills necessary to cope with the extreme ranges of his emotions. His father later remarried after Beaumont turned nineteen to a Starfleet Officer.

As much as he loved Earth he had inherited his fathers curiosity for exploring and within a few months of turning twenty he had enlisted with Starfleet.
Starfleet History Boot Camp seemed to go by much faster for Beaumont than he had envisioned six months prior. Based on his aptitude testing, it was concluded that he was most suited to engineering trades. He wasn’t surprised. He’d always had a fascination for systems and how they linked functions together so orderly. He just had to get through the initial training. At first, it was hard for him to handle having instructors yelling all the time, but to his surprise he adapted and moved on. If there was one only thing he learned from Starfleet it was confidence building. He barely passed his phaser qualification course, mainly due to the simulations themselves. His reluctance to fire the weapon at someone else almost had him disqualified. Beaumont still recalls that stressful month with embarrassment. His friend, Toor, a Vulcan training towards the security stream recognized that Beaumont lacked the usual training given to Vulcan children even training given to mixed species. So Toor taught him a method to clear his mind before engaging that would allow him to perform the task at hand without allowing his thoughts to focus on the emotional content of the situation and focus more on the task needing to be performed. To his instructors relief, Beaumont passed the retesting that had been scheduled and nothing further was said about it.

Finally, after six months, he graduated and was promoted to Crewman Apprentice where he was sent for training as an Impulse Systems Specialist. This training went by much smoother than boot camp. He excelled at systems management. His instructors were impressed by his ability to focus on the tiny details of the programming to achieve different project goals. While he didn’t show much aptitude for supervisory roles, it was quickly established that Crewman Beaumont may be a good fit as a trainer or mentor with additional training. Upon graduating the course he was promoted to Crewman and assigned as Impulse Systems Specialist aboard the USS Mississippi. During his time aboard his department head enrolled him in the Petty Officer Indoctrination course. His colleagues valued his hard work, and his dedication to the engineering team paid off with an opportunity to cross train under specialists on the matter/energy team. A year later he passed the qualification course and gained the matter/energy specialist designation. He continued to work long hours learning the different systems aboard the Miranda class and studying for his PO course. An opportunity presented itself for a unit transfer to a Nova Class Starship. It would only be a weekend course to upgrade his skills to the system settings and configuration standards of a Nova and it would be an opportunity he felt he shouldn’t pass up. So, much to the disappointment of those who enjoyed working with him, he put in for his transfer to the USS Galileo as an Matter/Energy Systems Specialist.

When he first transferred aboard, the Galileo was on shoreleave. During shoreleave he met Ellsworth Hudson, a quartermaster on the Galileo. They decided to go to Nusa Lembongan in Indonesia. While there, they shared a rather unique and powerful telepathic mind meld that connected the two of them together on a deeply intimate level. While confused by the experience, the two of them embraced it. The bond only became stronger with each mind meld the two men shared. To the point where eventually, the intensity of the mind melds triggered a strong Pon Farr in K'os. The mind melds combined with the telepathic link that forms within Betazoids for those they have strong emotional attachments combined to form a dependence for the neurochemical Psilosynine. Within Ellsworth the high levels of endorphin, oxytocin, vasopressin and other Neurohypophysial hormones contributed to a chemical dependence on their mind melds.

While Galileo was sent to a mining colony, K'os began to isolate himself from Ellsworth and other people. His Pon Farr was getting worse which meant that his concentration was weak. Had he made another mind meld with Ellsworth, he would most likely have transferred that Pon Farr to Ellsworth. K'os recognized the danger in continuing the relationship and decided to leave the ship to protect Ellsworth from himself. Had he stayed, Ellsworth would have convinced him to continue the mind melds. He saw no other way than to leave. Without any warning K'os requested an emergency leave of absence to deal with a personal matter.

[TRAINING WITH TOOR - K'os' detailed history of where he was during this time and what exactly he was doing will come out as a series of personal logs and will be updated here.]

During his time away, he stayed with his Vulcan friend Toor whom he met at the Academy. Toor had provided mental training during certain exams that proved emotionally draining or stimulating. At the time, he had recognized K'os' ability to disconnect from his ANS and limbic system and taught him how to modify Vulcan techniques to use. It was a surprise to see K'os show up at his home on Earth but Toor would help him through K'os' withdrawal. Without Psilosynine, K'os had a very hard time concentrating during mind melds and much of his withdrawal was very difficult to get through. Eventually when his body no longer depended on it, he began mind meld training with Toor. He adapted well, and with his new insight into how telepathy works and how to navigate neurons and pathways from his meld with Ellsworth he was able to excel in this training better than he had when he was a kid. He became quite adept at it.

With his training completed, K'os enrolled in a Starfleet Leadership Course in order to stay on Earth a little longer. A few months later he graduated and, K'os requested a transfer to the USS Nimitz. It was denied however, and due to a few strings and favours that Lieutenant Kita the Galileo's then Chief Engineering Officer pulled, K'os found himself transferred back to the Galileo.

Once onboard he learned that Ellsworth, who had largely believed K'os had just abandoned him, had by now moved on. However, eventually Ellsworth and K'os were drawn to each other by the bond and they melded again. Ellsworth learned of the Pon Farr and the dangers of their meld, and K'os learned of Oren, Ellsworth's current partner.

Despite the training, K'os found that his mental control worked for everyone else, except Ellsworth who was able to mentally draw K'os to him and force the meld simply through touch. K'os sought advice from his friend, Kohl where K'os admitted to him that he had an addiction and was convinced to seek help. K'os confronted Ellsworth to try and convince him to go to sickbay for treatment. Unfortunately K'os was too late to stop Ellsworth from breaking up with Oren to be with K'os before he could confront him. He told Ellsworth about his true feelings and that while he enjoyed Ellsworth's company and had great affection for him, it wasn't love and that their feelings were being clouded by the addiction to the mind melds.

After an intense bout of telepathic struggling for control, K'os won out and was able to convince Ellsworth that they needed to seek treatment. The end result of which had Dr. Allyndra discover the dangerous and potentially fatal mind melding the two men were doing. Ellsworth admitted to having a problem and the Doctor ordered both of them to avoid each other and to seek counseling.

Now, because of K'os' need to fix things or to help people, he is working hard to get Oren and Ellsworth back together while he also attempts to navigate a new if complicated kind of friendship with Andreus Kohl.

During the mission NIMBUS, and after seeking treatment for the above described addiction, K'os decided that it was time to start focusing on himself and start doing things to further his goal of being a mature and competent man. For the last two years, K'os has worked to complete Academy courses through correspondence study. With the occasional help from Kohl, his usual study buddy, K'os had completed enough courses to take the exams. He had held off on doing it, but after the events with Ellsworth and his new friendship with Kohl, he made the decision and took his exams.

Newly promoted to Ensign, and assigned to the Assistant Chief Engineer's position, K'os is continuing his quest on what it is to be a man in the often rocky waters of being a Vulcan/Human hybrid.
Medical History Hybrid Species
Mother: Vulcan | Father: Human
Blood Type: T-negative
Condition: Active Duty

2365 - [ Halifax Regional Medical Facility] - Born 7lbs 2oz. Neural activity, hormones, and limbic system activity seems abonormal for what is typical in a child of mixed species parents. Held for observation. Observations conclude abnormal levels are considered normal for the patient. Has not suffered any known problems as a result. Recommended for regular testing as a precaution.

2369 (Age 4) - [ San Francisco - Pediatric Neurology Clinic ] - Patient exhibits a high level of emotional instability; suffers from insomnia; irrational behaviour; rapid mood changes; inconsistent physiological response to emotional stimuli; complications due to elevated cortisol and adrenalin levels. Patient’s brain scans reveal an overactive limbic system causing hyper-emotionalism. Patient experiences near photographic memory and has total recall ability that is triggered by smells, colours, shapes, sounds, and verbal prompting, resulting in a kind of ‘memory cascade’ as the patient calls it. This can result in an emotional breakdown. Patient exhibits signs of Synesthesia, and may possibly be on the Autistic spectrum, the latter being inconclusive at this time. Prescribed mood stabilizers and have recommended testing by a Vulcan medical facility.

2370 (Age 5) - [ Vulcan Science Institute - Department of Exo-Neurology ] - Hybrid patient has experienced difficulty integrating his neurological anomalies. Mainly as a result of the mother being V'tosh ka'tur. Usual treatment of ritual meditation and intensive preparation for an aggressive Kolinahr is prescribed. Hybrid patient is expected to make a full recovery.

12-09-2370 (Age 5) - [ ShiKahr Elementary School ] - Broken wrist from altercation on school grounds. K’os was involved in a fight with two other students. Has been suspended for the rest of the week.

04-21-2372 (Age 7) - [ Vulcan Science Institute - Department of Exo-Neurology ] - Hybrid patient has shown aptitude for the basic techniques involved in Kolinahr but no change has been noted in his ability to control his hyper-emotionalism. Hybrid patient continues to lack the ability to integrate or adapt.

11-10-2372 (Age 7) - [ ShiKahr Elementary School ] - K’os was sent home after experiencing a blackout. K’os had gone over his allotted time with the activity he was doing. Another child took the activity away and K’os became upset. When the child refused to give the activity back, K’os became so distraught that he passed out. No other visible injuries were incurred.

01-07-2376 (Age 11) - [ Vulcan Science Institute - Department of Exo-Neurology ] - Increased mood stabilizers to maximum dosage. Results are inconsistent. On days when patient experiences low levels of stress or emotional stimuli, the drugs have mild effect. On days of high stress or when subjected to emotional stimuli, the drugs have no effect. Limbic system continues to be hyperactive; mainly in the memory and spacial awareness regions of the hippocampus, basolateral complexes and long-term memory storage regions of the amygdala and abnormal amounts of pinoline in the pineal gland. It has been noted during a number of melds, that the patient exhibits extraordinary conscious control over the Autonomic Nervous System regulatory input that’s given to the hypothalamus from the limbic system. This effectively allows the hybrid patient to control the physiological response to emotional stimuli. This could be used as a potential alternative therapy for the patient’s condition allowing the patient to experience hyper-emotional states without feeling the physical effects.

Partial transcript of Neurological test #32 - Patient Age 12

Dr. Jennifer McKinnan [Vulcan Science Institute]: Ok K’os. We’re going to start with the usual baseline tests and move on from there, alright?.
K’os Beaumont (Age 12, V/H Hybrid): Yes Ma’am.
McKinnan: How are you feeling today?
Beaumont: [LAUGHS] Four things today, Ma’am.
McKinnan: Four? Wow. Can you describe them?
Beaumont: Excited; afraid; mad; cheerful. Four. I’m excited because I like making those lines on the screen change when you ask me to, but afraid, that I’m going to be broken for a long time. Mad, because, I dunno, I’m always mad I guess [LAUGH]. Um, and cheerful because you put lily’s back in the waiting room again. I always feel cheerful when I smell lily’s.
McKinnan: Very good, K’os. Can you make yourself only feel cheerful for me?
Beaumont: [DEEP BREATH] Yes, Ma’am. That one’s easy.
McKinnan: For the record the monitor displays neural activity emanating from the limbic system, with expected levels of neural activity in the processing centers of the hypothalamus. Patient’s respiratory rate is stable, with elevated heart rate. Perspiration is normal for patient.
Beaumont: Do I stop it?
McKinnan: Not just yet, K’os.
Beaumont: Sure!
McKinnan: Patient’s heart rate has increased to 103 beats per minute. Slight perspiration of the hands. Respiration at 17 breaths per minute. How are you feeling now K’os?
Beaumont: [laughs] I’m reaaaly happy!
McKinnan: Ok K’os, can you disconnect for me now?
Beaumont: Yes, Ma’am.
McKinnan: That’s great. Patient’s heart rate has lowered to [PAUSE] 91 beats per minute. Respiration at 15 breaths per minute. Are you still feeling happy, K’os?
Beaumont: Yes, Ma’am. I mean, I think I am.
McKinnan: It is to be noted that neural activity from the limbic system has stabilized with several regions still active. ANS input regulators in the hypothalamus have ceased processing neural activity however.
